Something isnt right. A pilot should not be ejecting from a plane that can still fly on autopilot. The only thing I can come up with is maybe the oxygen system had failed and there was a concern the pilot was seconds away from blackout. There have been issues in the past with the F-35 oxygen system.

I always crack up at this dude's hair. Reminds me of Kramer on Seinfeld. Looks like he just came off a three day bender.

Back to the topic. Just where, oh where is our fighter jet? Too many details missing from the stories to figure out just what the hell is going on.

Check out the movie, Eraserhead. It's a cult classic.

Must have been a "stealth" F-35 and our radar systems couldn't keep track of it. And this happened over the US. So 400lb. guy in his mother's basement must have taken over the communication pod and programed the auto-pilot and sent it somewhere for some cash.

Where is anyone getting information that the auto-pilot was engaged? I don't believe they've officially released any of that type of information, yet, right?

It's in most of the media reports I've read. Then again, it's the media, so who knows if it's factual.

In reading up on this, there's been numerous crashes with this plane, and this one occurred where they train pilots on it. Most pilots don't just eject from planes that are performing properly. 07-coffee3

I can't get the scene from "Hunt for Red October" out of my head ... only roles are reversed and it's a plane.

Im starting to think its possible an issue with the oxygen system caused hypoxia---which resulted in compromised cognition and perhaps an unnecessary decision to eject. This is an old article from 2017 citing prior issues with the oxygen system.

if thats the case what altitude did he eject at? If warnings were going off wouldn't it be safer and a lot quicker for the pilot to take a working jet below the range of danger? Even without the warning and the pilot was feeling the effect he would have to know that jet was going to get below the danger altitude quicker than ejecting.

Even without the warning and the pilot was feeling the effect he would have to know that jet was going to get below the danger altitude quicker than ejecting.

Could be that the effect became too great by the time he realized what was happening----or it could possibly have been a multilayer problem (ie-the autopilt would not disengage) that became too complicated for the airman to solve in his compromised state of cognition. To be clear----Im just guessing---but there arent really very many situations that might trigger an ejection from an aircraft that appears to be perfectly capable of level flight on auto-pilot (especially when the pilot had no idea where the plane might land). Typically, you'd stay with the plane as long as possible so you could aid in determining exactly where it went down. The fact the pilot punched out tends to tell us that either he was in danger of imminent death or he lacked the ability to make a reasonable decision at the time. Either could happen with an oxygen failure---especially if there was another issue with the aircraft (autopilot locked at high altitude for some reason).

A stealth aircraft was lost and can't be found? Isn't that the way they're supposed to work? LOL

Seriously, one time we had an emergency where an F-16 had lost power. When the aircraft landed we responded and helped the pilot down from his aircraft. When he got down I asked him at what altitude he started his engine? He said I never did. In other words he coasted all the way down to the runway. He must have been going pretty fast and pretty high to sustain aerodynamics. That emergency was a classic.
