VCU Health System's financial woes continue

By ERIC KOLENICH, Richmond Times-Dispatch (Metered Paywall - 7 articles a month)

The Virginia Commonwealth University Health System posted an operating loss of $52 million, roughly 2% of its budget, in the 12-month span that ended March 31. And that does not include the $73 million the health system paid earlier this year to exit a development deal. VCU Health wrote that check to break its lease agreement with a private equity firm and a real estate developer at the site of the Public Safety Building in downtown Richmond.

I was at a dinner this last weekend and a couple of ODU professors were there. And they were very much AGAINST a merger. I was surprised.

I'm sure perspectives are very much dependent on disciplines.

Regardless, at this point, it doesn't seem to matter what anyone's opinions on the matter are. It's going to happen within the next year.

I was of the belief that most med schools operate in the red. If so, I can see some professors being concerned the med school could draw resources away from their programs.

This is a GREAT merger for a startup R1 University. It would have been better if it included all the EVMS healthcare network providers. That is where the HUGE $ are made.

The money is made at the hospitals, provider networks just assist in diverting patients to the hospital.

According the the professors, Sentara is the driving force behind the merger.

They most definitely are. They are the reason this finally became a reality.

No doubt about it. But its still a win, win. EVMS gets affiliation with a national university and state funding, ODU gets a med school (or whatever they decide to call it) and R1 academic prestige. Hampton Roads gets to brag about a major research/medical campus within its borders and hopefully draws some companies and higher salaried taxpayers to the region.

And I spoke with some ODU academic big wigs a few years ago who also were adamantly against a med school because in their words its "a giant money pit". They were afraid it would take money away from their own programs. Hopefully the state supplements ODU with enough money to stay whole in all ways.

Wrong...Hospitals do make money but have HUGE operating expenses...Sentara make most of their $ from their provider networks because they can charge hospital prices with lower operating costs.

Specialty groups (or as you keep referring to them as provider networks - an insurance term) have lost money for every hospital I have worked at. The downstream hospital revenue is what is important.

And if you don't take my word for it, take HFMAs:

MGMA did a piece on it as well:

Notice..Urgent care and Out Patient Treatment Centers were not included. That is what I am talking about. But whatever...The 2 reasons this mergers makes sense is it brings in Research funding and we can build academic programs that have a formal path to Med/PA school.

This merger is all I have to look forward to at this time with ODU. Athletics is not going anywhere, as long as the current administration stays in charge.

Good editorial on the merger.

Good stuff! This statement is incorrect though:

In August 2021, officials from ODU, EVMS and Norfolk State University reached an agreement to create a School of Public Health, the commonwealth’s first...

GMU opened the first one in VA: https://publichealth.gmu.edu/about/about-college

Not that it really matters, but newspapers should get it right.

We have the 1st Doctoral Program in Public Health. We have had a track that allows a graduate and under graduate degree in public health. Now with the merger a couple of years back we were able to formalize that and include a Doctoral track.

New rankings out. And an interesting article. Gust of it: VT rises above WM. JMU, GMU and VCU all 100+ higher. We’re tied with Hampton.
