EVMS - Now is the time.
This is the time for Old Dominion to put the full court press on annexing EVMS under the Old Dominion umbrella. It needs to happen and this is the time to exert full political pressure.

Why do you think W&M investigated merging with them and opted to just do a joint MBA/MD program?

Because it would have cost them a lot more, it doesn't make as much geographic sense, it was really just a plan between two good friends, neither of whom are presidents of the schools any longer, and W&M thinks its better than EVMS.

I think a EVMS/ODU merger would be a huge winner in so many ways for all parties involved. Hampton Roads would be served by having a true tech, medical, research education corridor running up Hampton Blvd. Ghent would thrive as a bridge between two campuses and would be able to take on a bit of that true "college area" vibe. EVMS would gain valuable state funding and all of the amenities being associated with a large state campus offer.... including the rec centers, athletics, community, research and study abroad opportunities etc. ODU would also win on the research and academic front and would be able to reap the benefits of having a good medical school and the research dollars and prestige that come with it. Not to mention the alumni dollars. Both schools would benefit from the added notoriety and partnership opportunities. EVMS could open a presence at the ODU VB center across from the VB health campus too. Lastly, Hampton Roads would benefit as more students would come to HR to study and some would likely stay after graduation. The community would have access to more cutting edge and experimental health care options. Business would locate in the area to have access to the students and researchers coming out of the two schools, and with more medical and biotech professionals in the area, the average salary would rise. With that more state and local taxes are paid and more is given philanthropically. Its worked for VCU. Its working for ECU and now VT. Its time EVMS and ODU work on an official partnership with a long term plan to explore merging. I truly think it would be a great thing for all involved.

If it makes sense financially then I say go for it. They could definitely use some re-branding right now.

VB Monarch is right. Hard to see it making financial sense, while also getting the state to agree to fund them at the same level as MCV.

RE: EVMS - Now is the time.
It wont make financial sense in the short term. The state would definitely have to pony up some money to even make it feasible. But I think its certainly doable once the research dollars and grants start flowing in. It would be a long term commitment that would have its ROI down the road. A more prestigious university, with much much more name recognition and respect would draw more and better students, professors, researchers, businesses, investors, donors etc. It would even trickle down to athletics. If VCU and ECU can figure out a way to make a medical school work, there is absolutely no reason ODU/EVMS cant do the same. I would have hoped with a Governor from Norfolk and and EVMS grad, he would have worked to make it happen. But alas, he seemed to support the WM move instead at the time it was being considered.

Well said and yes this move doesn't make sense when you look at short term but would be a great move for the future. Health industry is projected to be a top employer and we have seen no reason to doubt that so having a medical school associated with ODU will be sweet.

MCV was a public medical school long before the merger. The same goes for Brody (ECU). Both already had the full support of their respective states. EVMS isn't comparable to either situations.

Rumor is that VT and VCU are trying to move into the region via EVMS. Sentara is holding them off via the legislative route.

Move in as in making a run at EVMS, or as in running branded medical centers and offices? Because if it's the latter, it'd be funny to think that Sentara, which has grown into the region's 900-pound gorilla in health care over the past 30-some years, is unhappy that something is threatening their dominance.

Both...using the VT/Carrilion and VCU/MCV medical systems and schools to take over EVMS and begin taking over providing health care to the region.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the area's hospitals are mostly Sentara, so unless they plan to buy out Bon Secours' Hampton Roads presence, they're going to have a hard time getting a foothold. Isn't Chesapeake the only non-chain hospital?

RE: EVMS - Now is the time.
I don't know the details of the plan but I do know they were after EVMS and several hospitals in the region. I will tell you that many in the region got involved (Including ODU) to work the GA to stem this effort. However, I know that both VT and VCU are not going to let this die. They see major revenue streams in healthcare that can be used to keep their Universities academically strong and financially solvent. If ODU does not do something soon to generate new streams of revenue it will have a hard time with a growing reliance on $ from the State.

Such a potentially huge story and not one sentence about it anywhere in the press. Incredible.

Think about that. I heard it from SW Va. Perhaps it was nipped in the bud. But it won't be long if something doesn't change.
