I've never understood why HBCU schools would leave an HBCU conference to another conference with other non-HBCU schools that they have nothing in common with. What happens to the leftovers? Do they all drop down to D2?

A few HBCU schools just went to Colonial Athletic Association. Southland needs to get Jackson State.

Because the MEAC is lower profile than the SWAC - the fan support varies heftily between the two leagues.

Jackson State would never leave the SWAC for the Southland. Those alums would riot, as would the city if they weren’t guaranteed the crowds from the Boombox Classic, Alcorn, FAMU, etc. The SWAC schools’ value is inherently tied into HBCU culture and generations-long rivalries — attendance and donor support would go down leaving the SWAC.

You would think fans would rather compete for actual championships. Bring rival like Florida A&m with them.

They care about championships. They care about the SWAC and HBCU championships. Those 2 games are aired on ESPN2 and ABC.

FAMU wants home games against Southern, Jackson St, etc. They have no interest in Southland schools. The HBCU factor is what drives ticket sales and donations - which is where they generate revenue as FCS leagues aren’t reeling in tv money.

Compare these schools’ attendance in SWAC and non-SWAC games and you’ll have your answer.

RE: Southland Conference Looking To Expand
The Southland ought to sit back and wait for the WAC to get raided again. The worst case scenario for the WAC is the Pac-12 taking a significant portion of the Mountain West but not actually merging.

As an example:
Pac-12 loses 6 more schools by 2025 to Big 12, Big 10
Pac-12 adds Colorado State, Hawaii, UNLV, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah State, San Diego State, Fresno State (the first six are R1 institutions, San Diego State and Fresno are R2)
Mountain West adds New Mexico State, UTEP, Cal Poly, UC Davis, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Montana, Montana State
C-USA adds Stephen F. Austin and Tarleton State
Big Sky adds Southern Utah and Utah Tech

This puts the WAC and Summit both at 7 with Cal and Stanford in the heavily duct-taped PAC 12 looking to jump ship. The UAC would be down to 6 in football, with only 2 of those being from the WAC (Abilene Christian, UTRGV). I could see the Southland taking ACU and UTRGV. The Summit would take UT-Arlington, who would be the last remaining WAC member in Texas.

If the Pac-12 loses eight at the same time instead of six, I could see them taking Boise State and San Jose State from the Mountain West; the Mountain West taking Weber State and Sacramento State; and the Big Sky taking Seattle, Cal Baptist, Grand Canyon, and Utah Valley. The Southland takes ACU and UTRGV. The Summit takes UT-Arlington.

The UAC ends. With the OVC up to seven full members playing football, the ASUN football schools take the Big South football schools as affiliates.

Completely agree

I don't know about Central Arkansas, but I do believe SFA is looking to eventually move up to FBS. They're just waiting for an invitation from Conference USA.

Done deal once Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee are promoted to the SBC?

UCA wants FBS as well. They are in the Little Rock metro, and is in the Little Rock tv market. They could use War Memorial Stadium while the work on their stadium being done to expand.

If any school "wants" FBS then they should be doing the prep now a la Tarleton. Tarleton definitely wants it and has put A&Ms money where it's mouth is and has made attempts become more desirable to CUSA.

You think every school should become or wants to become FBS but very few on your page long lists have actually taken action.

Perhaps. They did just join the University of Texas System so it's not like they won't have the finances anymore. (Just need to do some fundraising athletically, which should jumpstart the process. Plus, my niece is going to be on the SFA dance team on a full scholarship starting in the fall so that would be cool to see her dance on regional tv.)

Might not even have to waif for that. I just don't think C-USA wants five members transitioning from FCS at the same time.

C-USA
West - NMSU, UTEP, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Central Arkansas, Louisiana Tech
East - FIU, Liberty, WKU, MTSU, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State

Missouri State would be welcome if they are interested, but aside from that Tarleton State and UTRGV would be next in line.

I'd love to hear how they would add 10,000 seats without tearing something down. Not sure they could add 5,000 seats. They have no open space.

SDSU currently qualifies as a Carnegie Classified R1 institution...they're in the process of getting reclassified to Carnegie R1...

Like PAC adds MWC R1 Institutions (7) + Fresno State
*PAC loses USC/UCLA (2)
**SDSU & Fresno St. replace USC/UCLA
*PAC loses 4C schools (4)
**MWC remaining R1s replace 4Cs
*PAC adds CSU & UNM as insurance just in case Stanford & Cal defect...
*IF PAC loses more than that THEN they should just merge with the MWC under the PAC banner...

Like MWC adds New Mexico State & UTEP from FBS...
adds MN, MN St., Sac. St., Cal Poly, UC Davis, Weber State to get to 10...

Like BSC adds Southern UT, UT Tech, & UVU to get to 6 FB/ 1 Non FB members...
adds ACU, UTRGV, & UTA to get to 8 FB/ 2 Non FB members...
adds two (2) from Seattle/Cal Baptist/GCU to get to 8 FB/ 4 Non FB members...

WCC adds Cal Baptist/GCU to replace BYU...

*GCU can probably buy its way in...

The businesses and Little Rock wants FBS football games back at War Memorial Stadium. It would be a win/win for both Little Rock and UCA right now. They wanted Little Rock to add football, but they past on it.

Because the Southland is garbage in every other sport whereas the WAC is not. In men’s basketball, the RPI was 11th, compared to 30th for the SLC. The winner of the SLC gets the play-in game more often than not. The WAC is consistently a 12/13 seed.

UCA have been a powerhouse in football, men's basketball and baseball. Southland have not been that strong in 2 of the 3 sports. Moving to another conference like the A-SUN which showed schools like Mercer, FGCU, North Florida, Belmont, etc had some success in men's basketball? Then they could recruit the same players to get back what was lost.

I would say competitive but not necessarily power house

I don't know about Central Arkansas, but I do believe SFA is looking to eventually move up to FBS. They're just waiting for an invitation from Conference USA.

The businesses and Little Rock wants FBS football games back at War Memorial Stadium. It would be a win/win for both Little Rock and UCA right now. They wanted Little Rock to add football, but they past on it.

It would make more sense working with Arkansas State to play a few games @ War Memorial.
