Usually catchers that can hit are a premium.
They certainly are. I hate uva but I'm a Red Sox fan so i love that we got Kyle Teel. Super steal at pick 14.

That was another surprise. Not that Teel was taken 14th, but that he was the SECOND catcher taken behind a high school kid. Man, if I was drafting, I would be very suspicious of high school hitters. They just don't see the pitching that they would at a high level in college. Teel has proven he can hit good pitching from his career in college.
Maybe the HS kid played against good travel ball pitching.

Sam Armstrong to the Cubs in the 13th round! WTG Sam!
20 picks after the Cubs drafted Carter Trice

I am a little surprised that Sam Armstrong was the only Monarch drafted (as far as I can tell). I wonder if Hunter and/or Ticer come back to ODU for another year?

I was told Ticer is coming back. He’s currently playing with the Pilots this summer. Would expect Hunter to sign as UDFA today or in the coming week. But having both back would be very good.

Yeah at the elite level these high school kids have faced good opponents through AAU, travel ball, various camps, olympics, etc.
The other thing is teams are drafting early for the highest upside. A kid can hit decent in college but teams have questions about how it translates

I was wondering how did he go undrafted, best of luck. One coast to the other.

His hitting was great no doubt but i definitely think he made probably way too many errors at 1st for some teams liking.

1B defense is the last thing they will care about. Hes an older college player coming off an injury with little upside

Are you mixing him up with Ticer? Hunter was healthy.

Sorry- yeah. But 1B or corner outfielders are not high up the pecking order. Many guys drop bc of that.

Ben Moyzan, 3B/RHP committed to ODU back in May but I guess I missed that update. He’s currently at IMG academy taking a post grad year. He’s got a good frame at 6’1, 195. Fastball in the low 90s, hits tanks. Good pickup.

Was told Lincoln Ransom has decided to return to ODU but will change positions to pitcher.

RE: 2023 ODU Baseball Roster Changes
I've been a little surprised that Levari hasn't pitched any during his time at ODU. Comments from Coach Finwood after Kenny (and others including Lincoln Ransom) signed with ODU -
Finwood on Levari: "Although most professional scouts love his arm and project him as a pitcher, we really think Kenny can be a fantastic two-way player in college. On the mound, he possesses a low to mid 90's fastball with a good curveball. In the field he is a really good left-handed hitter with a strong arm and has a bright future as an infielder as well. We love Kenny's competitive nature and are excited about his future in pinstripes."

Good to hear.
From the highlight video that Stephen Schoch posted a couple of months ago, he has a high arm slot and a 12-6 curveball (Peninsula Pilots highlights).

Yeah. It's a tough decision. First you need an adequate third baseman when he is pitching. Two-way players are best suited for 1st base as they have limited throws when not pitching. Outfield would be the next best choice. But the biggest factor is probably the work needed as a pitcher in order to have adequate control. He would still have to take infield practice and batting practice where the "Pitchers-only" don't.

Im not a fan of players doing both at the college level either. Its just too much to ask in some respects. Maybe a closer type that only pitches one inning.

RE: 2023 ODU Baseball Roster Changes
I remember a couple seasons ago when ODU played against ECU, the Pirates had an infielder (Zach Agnos) that started at shortstop or 2B and pitched in relief both times we played them. ECU had another player (Ryder Giles) who started one of the games against ODU at shortstop and later came in to pitch 2-2/3 innings in relief. Zach Agnos moved over from 2B to play shortstop when Giles pitched, and Agnos also pitched an inning in relief that game as well.

They've made the supers more times than they have missed the tournament since 2000 so they must be doing something right.
