If a full inning is played after 5 innings then yeah, stop the game and award a winner.

That sounds just a whole lot more fair.

But that’s exactly what they did. The 6th was completed. The 7th was not.

You can argue to not start the 7th at all, but a) you can’t predict either when lightning will strike or how long it’ll take to get 6 outs, and b) if you don’t start the 7th, LT never takes the lead in the first place, rendering the whole thing moot.

Then it would be a no contest. That isn't what they did. They played a half inning. If the unexpected happens and only half an inning gets played, then it's a no contest. No one gets the W or the L. It's clear Ole Miss manipulated the rules to their favor. At least my way they couldn't get a win for doing so. Easier for both teams to walk away as if it never happened than to award a victor like that.

OK. I gotcha now. ‘Preciate the clarification.

Ole Miss did not successfully manipulate the situation, though. They presumably tried to by not putting the tarp on the field so they could say the field wouldn’t allow play to resume even if the weather did. However, it never got that far because the rain didn’t let up. Mother Nature took care of things on UM’s behalf on that. Again, by Tech’s own words, they agreed with the stoppage. They’re mad that the game won’t be completed and the half-inning was struck from the books.

And Ole Miss doesn't have to do it since it wasn't a conference game from what I understood.

I feel confident saying that (behind closed doors at least) all parties involved at both schools would welcome a rule change to prevent situations like that for happening. I’ve talked to former players at both schools and they all agreed that it’s a dumb rule.
