There are theoretically 3 easy teams to face based on SBC baseball RPI's. The rest are brutal. This conference is better than the B1G.

The win and second close game with Coastal is promising. They are ranked #19 in the country I believe. We also have #5 UVA on the schedule yet.

And Coastal won 2 of 3 against Texas State (including a 19-0 beatdown in Game 1!) and beat #13 UNC yesterday. Really hoping that that series is not the highlight of our season...

RE: 2023 Baseball Diamond Dukes
Apparently we had a baseball game today. Lost 3-19 to USA.

This gave USA (11-15 / 2-5) their second conference win. We are 2-3 in conference so far. Missing 2 of the Ark St. games hurts our conference chances. Swiping one from Coastal was nice but our pitching staff looks extremely suspect this year, unfortunately not very competitive in the SBC. Would do well in the sub-par A10.

It was a good comeback from the humiliation suffered in game one. Now 3-3 in SBC games.

Back to form in the rubber match. Down 11-2 in the top of the 5th. Only 1 out and USB with 2 on. Looks like it’s going to be a long day for the Diamond Dukes.

So, the recap of today's game says it only went 7 innings because of run rule. Why didn't that apply to Friday's game?

Good question. I found this:

One common refrain among casual college baseball fans can be heard every season – exactly how many innings are they supposed to play? Is it seven? Is it nine? Fortunately, the answer isn't too complicated. Ordinarily, the NCAA prefers that teams play full nine-inning games. By further clarifying exactly when a game can be seven innings, they have recently begun to openly encourage teams to have as many nine-inning games as possible. There are two specific exceptions to this policy. Seven-inning games are allowed if (A) it's the final day of an intra-conference series or (B) two teams (in a non-conference match) have a scheduled double header. Because these certain circumstances are fairly uncommon, an overwhelming majority of games in college last the full nine innings.

Only the 3rd game of a series played on Sunday (the get out of town day) is subject to the run-rule. The game is deemed over if one team leads by 10 after 7.

RE: 2023 Baseball Diamond Dukes
Diamond Dukes (16-11 / 3-4) have an interesting next two months coming up. Alone at the bottom of the east but not out of it. Just need to be 10th place to get into the SBCT. We are currently in 11th, losing to 12th USA this past weekend didn't help.

Easter weekend we have GAST at home. GAST is one game ahead of us in the SBC East currently 10th in conference. Important team to win a series against.

Then we have formerly ranked Southern Miss. Followed by 3rd place Louisiana, yikes. Missing two games against 13th place ARKST might be a difference maker with this tough finish.

Remaining series: GAST (10th), @ USM (6th), ULL (3rd), @ APP (4th), @ Marshall (9th), ODU (2nd), @GS (7th). All teams are ahead of us. Plenty of room to gain ground but it will be an uphill fight.

I'll be there as soon as my Osher Lifelong Learning Institute class on Outdoor and Wildlife Photography (the kind of thing you sign up for once you're retired) is over at 3 PM.

Need to increase that 3 game lead in the all-time series which stands at 51-48-1. #GoDukes

RE: 2023 Baseball Diamond Dukes
Dukes beat the Spuders 11-8. Moving the Diamond Dukes to 17-11 on the season.

Dukes are now 7-0 against Virginia foes and 9-0 when combining GW (they have a Loudoun campus).

We are 8-11 against all others. We are 4-9 against schools south of Virginia. 2-4 against South Carolina schools.

Yeah, we have discussed this before- how is it we can beat all the schools in state but cannot win a series otherwise? Do we need to expand our recruiting footprint- move more south? Football is certainly doing that- moving south and north and Midwest and Cali. Anywho, it is obvious we have some quality players, but wth is up with us on the weekend?

Used to be that mid-week games, once conference play started, were a lower priority (as they weren't conference games). So often times you'd see a 4th best pitcher or similar. Maybe there's not as much of a drop off between our top pitchers and those that get used midweek?. Other schools might have better top starters but have more of a drop off after their top 2 or 3 pitchers.

It's almost like we excel in games where the other team prepares less for us. As you said, these games are very low priority which means that probably less prep goes into it on both sides. Either we are winning via pitching depth or Ike is better in the lower priority games. I'm not going to say outcoached. Either way our pitching hasn't looked extremely stout weekends or weekdays.

A) We have a very deep rotation compared to A10 schools - we'll see what this looks like against our P5 foes later on.
B) Ike succeeds in minimally prepped games. Good talent, just bad coach prep. In some spare time I'll dig up Ike's weekday versus weekend history
C) VMI, VCU, Mason, GW, Richmond just aren't competitive baseball schools anymore. We'll see what Tech and UVA do to us. I'd like to bring back the Liberty series just to see where we stand with schools who invest into their programs.

Once upon a time JMU held its own against all of those VA programs. Now? Not so much. I’m expecting JMU Will gets its clock clean this year when we play SoMiss, and sadly, ODU.

Dukes with a walk-off grand slam to best GState 4-3 and clinch the series win.

It didn’t look like it got out by much, and I thought it was caught at first. It doesn’t matter though- a walk off granny is a walk-off granny! Go Dukes. What a great outing from our starting pitcher. He’s been solid most of the year. 8 strong- only gave up 4 hits with 7 strikeouts. ERA for the year is under 4.
