2023 Baseball Diamond Dukes
It's January 2nd, 2023.

Time to start talking some baseball!

What's folks take on this spring squad without Chase DeLauter?

I have zero expectations at this point. Hopefully, joining a higher profile baseball conference will give our recruiting a jolt. Ultimately though, we're getting what we paid for. Ike is what he is...

Have they or when does the SBC put out the conference predictions?

Sub .500 and in the bottom 4?

That may be too hopeful. I’d like to be wrong, then again, any signs of life would only encourage JB to extend Ike’s contract. 03-weeping

We have some huge departures from an average team - the top two that I can think of is Chase DeLauter, of course, and Travis Reifsnider who was our second best hitter, transferring to UVA. I haven't read any pre-season stuff from UVA but I am curious to see how Reifsnider shakes out with them, good hitter and good defensive catcher. Does he crack the lineup there?

I was impressed by a few of the freshman last year, especially Fenwick Trimble. Some good players littered throughout the team but the constant is that even with some individually good players, Ike still has a hard time winning big games. It seems like we are always an incomplete team. One year hitting is deep, while pitching is lacking, then vice-a-versa for the next season.

Overall, not very encouraged. My only hope is that the step up in Sun Belt competition shows us how mediocre and lacking baseball has been for the past decade. Outside of playing our usual P5 foes (UVA, VT, UMD, and FSU), I see our overall record being buoyed by the cupcake OOC early on then tanked in-conference.

GA State, GA Southern, ODU, Southern Miss, ULL, and Costal all have been very good programs with many earning national seeds within recent years. I just don't see how we can be competitive against them if we couldn't get past Northeastern, UNCW, or even Elon with several MLB prospects.

RE: 2023 Baseball Diamond Dukes
I have expectations for this team, and they are not good.
Historically, this is JMU under Ike:
2016 James Madison 24–31 13–11 4th CAA Tournament
2017 James Madison 24–27 7–17 7th
2018 James Madison 26–26 11–13 7th
2019 James Madison 31–26 11–13 6th CAA Tournament
2020 James Madison 10–6 0–0 Season canceled due to COVID-19
2021 James Madison 11–17 6–9 5th (South)
2022 James Madison 27–26 12–11 5th

Keep in mind that was in the CAA. The Sun Belt is a much, much better conference. I don't see any way this team makes it to .500. Unfortunately standards are really low for JMU baseball, so that's probably good enough for an extension.
I love baseball, but JMU baseball is so damn frustrating.

This seems like a safe projection for 2023. After a quick look at our SBC mates, I just do not see how we finish in the upper half of the league. I hope the same is not true for our softball team. I am more optimistic are ladies will fare better in their SBC season debut than our gentlemen.

Softball should be very competitive and have a legit shot at the regular season crown. This is a bounce-back season.

The baseball team…03-phew

I am approaching apathy level with this program, so it is only going to hurt as long as I am stupid enough to let it.

Why hasn’t jmusports.com updated the roster? It still shows last year’s, unless I am totally missing it. Wanted to get a closer look at the roster. I know there are a few transfers too.

Maybe they will make a coaching change after this season is over. The schedule is quite the upgrade. Hopefully, in due time, the talent and coaching will be there.

Three weeks until Opening Day, I expect FSU to sweep us. Probably lose the three games 7-1, 4-2, and 9-3. Not much excitement before SBC play. However, I’m very excited to watch our new conference mates as we have some very good midmajor programs in here. Here’s to better days.

JMU sport blog interviewed coach Ike this week. Actually an interesting listen. Talks current roster, analytics in the college game, SBC, injuries, last year with Chase etc. I think a moving company is in the room moving furniture during the interview, but ignore that background noise and it’s a decent listen.
