RE: Joseph Goodman: Will UAB ever be a basketball school again?
A few things. A true UAB knew exactly who Gaines was the second we got him. People I know that aren’t remotely UAB fans started to talk to me about our portal class and Gaines. But to his point we’ve gotta advertise basketball better. Can’t remember if it was him on Twitter or someone else but you can drive around campus and see no championship banners, no NCAA tournament banners, no Jelly Walker banners. Our student section is stronger than it was last season but they aren’t involved. We need 10-15 crazy idiots that dress up like hulk hogan and crap to be at the front hyping everyone up. I know we all remember those years of the student section.

Hard to take anything he says seriously when the cover photo for his article is “Eric Gaines” throwing down a dunk is actually Ty brewer

And he says we won the CUSA regular season title last year. We didn't. Dude can't even check his facts. And why does he insist on always referring to UAB as the "Southside Dragons.". Its so stupid. This guy sucks.

Dumb take. Dumber use of Southside Dragons. We are not going to use the nickname you are trying to force on us. That isn’t how it works.

I guess all black guys look the same to him...
He got his panties in a bunch yesterday and just isn't going to let it go.
So, since he obviously reads here, how about he throws UAB a bone and helps us out? What are your solutions to get more people in the building Mr. UAB should do better? How do we get the team more exposure? How do we get the city behind the team? The UAB fan base has done a lot to help this program and the football program. Everybody can't force ten people to come to a game with them. What legitimate solutions can you offer to this problem? Anybody can point their finger at a problem, it takes a special person to solve said problem.
Also, you are a damn fool if you truly believe the Iron Bowl will have no impact on the attendance of a game against Rhodes.

This may be an unpopular opinion but one thought I have is that casual basketball fans that aren’t UAB specific fans aren’t going to come to more than one or two games a season. I doubt you’re going to have an Auburn fan and their family come to all UAB home games. Nor can you expect alumni that don’t live within 45 minutes of the arena to make a 6:30pm weeknight game every week. Sure, maybe one or two, but be realistic. They aren’t coming and wasting time or money to watch the Presbyterian Blue Hose and Rhodes. And to be honest, I’d rather the casual fans not waste their few visits a year on a game like that. Come to the WKU game. The FAU or North Texas game. Hell, Charlotte looks much improved, come to that one. Give us a home court advantage when we need it the most

Facts aren’t right. Player names/pictures aren’t right. Uses a made up, inflammatory, stupid moniker for our team. Says he didn’t know who Eric Gaines was before some yahoo texted him.
Why does this clown have any credibility?

RE: Joseph Goodman: Will UAB ever be a basketball school again?
UAB didn’t draw crowds for midweek games like Presbyterian in the heights of the 1980s.
Joe knows this.
I had hoped his little Twitter fit yesterday might have just been a tactic to drum up some page views today, and that he would surprise us with an original and intelligent take full of ideas on how to get Birmingham to pay more attention to the good show happening in town. Alas, we didn’t get that effort but instead got the predictable low-IQ finger pointing at the very people who actually care.
While we are at it, let’s examine how Al dot com is part of the problem. Sure, not their job to sell tickets, but they haven’t covered this program even slightly adequately in more than a decade. When they say UAB basketball doesn’t matter, why should the guy sitting down there in a brewery in Avondale get off his barstool and into Bartow on a Monday night?

AL.com is a national corporate entity not local as much as they also want to claim. They are clickbait when it comes to sports and their articles should be treated as just that

They’re clickbait on about anything. “According to CashNetUSA here is Alabama’s favorite fast food” and then say freaking Daylight Donuts or DogWalker.com says that Birmingham is the 17th best city to sit on a patio and eat with your dog or Huntsville is the 3rd most likely city for your spouse to cheat on you. Like???? Real hard hitting journalism they’re doing over there!

AK and Noah Dartman (on the staff) retweeted the article. I think AK is expecting more fan support now that he's won and we're coming off a NCAA tournament trip.
But the reality is (hopefully AK knows this), you aren't going to get a packed house for a Wednesday November game against Presbyterian unless you're a top 10 program. Wednesday's game shouldn't be used as the test for fan attendance. The numbers will keep growing as the season goes. If we have the kind of team I think we do then I expect will have some good crowds for the conference schedule.
Also, this program was down for so long that fan engagement took a big hit. Unfortunately, I don't think that's a quick fix.

AK knows getting the fan support up is important for recruiting and in growing the base of supporters for NIL. He isn’t going to be able to keep signing bigtime players out of the portal much longer without butts in seats that get involved with the program.
It ain’t wrong to challenge Birmingham to step up at this time, but geez, it isn’t necessary to finger wag the actual UAB fans over the imaginary ones who aren’t there.
Joe could have made the entire point without the snark directed at the people who care and have given until their wallets bleed.

Figures that he’d use a picture of our exhibition game, instead of a game that counted and had about twice the crowd. If he was supposedly at that game, why didn’t he use a picture from the Prysbeterian game? I guess whatever dishonesty helps him drive home his point.

Will UAB ever be a journalism school again?
Joseph Goodman is an embarrassment. It embarrasses me that this buffoon holds the same degree I do. Let's start with this lede:
A text message from a trusted friend was the first time I heard about the ability of UAB basketball player Eric Gaines.
It's a passive structure, which is the sign of a weak writer, but at least it's one sentence which is an improvement from Joe. But let's look a little deeper into what this means.
UAB is getting a good one, it read. Great player.
It was an understatement.
Who even is Eric Gaines? I didn’t really know at the time.
Eric Gaines is first mentioned on Blazertalk on 1 April. The buzz grew strong on the 7th and 8th, and Gaines visited campus on the 9th and committed then. All of this was all over UAB Twitter/Instagram, with highlight vids (mostly that Iowa State block) constantly repeated.
What we have here, were I in charge of that newsroom, is a resignation letter. A confession - and it has to be seen in that light - that Joseph Goodman is incapable of doing the job for which Advance Media issues him a paycheck. He had never heard of Eric Gaines until Father Watford sent him a text, after Gaines had committed.
When you perform the act of journalism, rumors are your stock-in-trade. You don't print rumors, not if you're a professional. But you're aware of them so that you can turn them into fact through the act of "reporting" (I'll put that in scare quotes since it's a foreign concept to our Joe, who whines about not getting press releases handed to him).
As I've written here before, they're hiring at Hamburger Heaven right now.
Thank God for Heather Hrynkiw. At least UAB has produced an actual journalist in the past decade.
