Since I went FloSports, I didn’t spring for ESPN+. (Yes, I am an idiot!).

I am very interested in the observations of those of you who did watch the game. The comments about the offense are pretty depressing.

Sigh. Well, at least we have Football....and maybe Women's Basketball.

This is a poorly coached team. If this continues, Dane should not be here next year, whether we are paying three coaches at once or not.

We have some good players, what we don’t have is a strategy to generate quality scoring chances for them. I had hoped this would improve but so far the four-game trend is a flat line.

But we are MUCH more athletic now…shouldn’t we be able to convert on that play more often?

I’m kidding. Something’s gotta give with this offense…we have too much talent out there to be mired in a poor offensive scheme.

3 shots from the floor and the 1 bucket difference from the charity stripe looks to be the difference. Shame, because I thought we looked capable.

Can't say I'm surprised with how bad our team looks. The only reason Dane looked good his first season is because he had a generational talent in Knight. This team has pretty much been flat out awful after he lost/graduated all the players shaver brought in.

Still a boneheaded decision to get rid of shaver when we did ?‍♂️ I still get sad thinking about a possible starting 5 of audige, LJ, Knight, VV, and Milon/Loewe for 2019/20 - and that is assuming Pierce was leaving whether shaver was coach or not

I’m not going to spend another season banging on Dane, but drawing up plays is his responsibility. He has to do better if we’re going to do anything in conference play.

I missed tonight's game due to another commitment. Reading the thread it appears my frustration level is lower because of that.

I really don't know why everyone rags on Dane, while the rest of the world has not had any issues, this is HIS 4TH FIRST YEAR!!!

How could he be expected to declassify an offensive strategy given that? I wonder if we could require Shaver to teach someone on this staff the principles of offensive basketball in order to continue to receive his ill advised, Samantha inspired buyout. He seemed to have that part down pretty well...

Boatner played 4 years for Shaver and also was part of his coaching staff.

I am aware of that, but I don't see evidence on the floor that it has carried over to any of Fisher's teams. A refresher course may be in order.

My apologies. I attended the game at Hokie High Sunday and came away impressed by the players grit, talent and physical skill levels, but deeply discouraged by the coaching that they are receiving and the almost total lack of in game adjustments or sense of urgency.

I am totally impressed with Mike Young as a coach. He was 0-2 vs. Shaver.

Dane appears to still be running a ball screen motion offense.
This offense depends on good decision-tree synced action (players recognizing defense actions and then paying off that) to perform at its best.
Dane was not able to get his team to run this effectively his first 3 years and any early
optimism that new players would learn it quickly and perform it better is fading.
the team seems lost offensively at crunch time in the 3 real games this year.
Running the same system over and over and expecting a different result is …

Disappointing bc that was a winnable game. A few reactions…

Strange to see Mullins go aggressive 1:1 to the hoop on each of the last 4-5 (?) possessions of a close game, when that has been part of our offense a grand total of 0 times all season! I mean, he got fouled every time so not saying it was a terrible strategy, but very telling how out of sync our offense is.

Coach still clearly looking for the right combo of players. Lots of new combos tonight. Interesting to see who he had out there in the waning minutes of the game.

If Wight has a better game, we win. It changed the entire complexion when he struggled to get any FG to drop early on.

Our lack of an offensive scheme over multiple seasons shows that Dane has not recognized the critical failure of his coaching staff.

We have awesome talent but the inability to get the right players on the court adds to the frustration.

our chances for an at large bid are slipping away.

Not that we need one, but it’s yet another reason to lament the loss of Tony’s offensive system. Sure he never won “the Big One” and we complained about poor defensive play all the time, but offensively the games were much less frustrating to watch. (And yes, I know Tony’s not coming back.)

I’m also not sure we have “awesome talent” but we do seem to have better players than we’ve had in the last few years. Hopefully they’ll continue to develop…and WE will remember this is still a brand new team: only 2 players who played last night (not counting Jake’s last-second sub at the end of the first half) were on the team last year. I trust they’ll get better.
