RE: Game Week: @Akron
A win is a win, I'll take it. That game was still an embarrassment though. That Wiley kid had 144 yards last night, going into the game he only had 214. The worst rushing attack in America ran all over us, and that is without multiple o-linemen throughout the game and top runner (their QB) going out in the first half.
The playcalling was frustrating again. I like doing some misdirection and trick plays, like I thought the one against Toledo was a great play and perfect time for it. When you are going up against an awful team and the first drive you just keep giving it to Evans and they can't stop him...why stop?!?! Just let him punch it in and go up 7-0, instead we run that QB throwback that got blown up. Then of course the Creighton special, we're up two scores with lots of time left in the 4th quarter...who didn't see a sequence of run, run, pass, here is the ball coming?
On the plus side, yes I know their defense is bad, but the O-line played great, and Sameson was the man last night! Clearly not 100% but kept pounding away and was awesome on the final drive to drain out the clock and bring home the win! I also though Smith looked better as a passer, he was only 16/28 (probably could have been 18-20/28 if not for a few drops). Made a few nice throws, and didn't miss any wide open guys (at least that I can remember). His one interception was a bad throw, but it was a 4th down so I guess not the end of the world.
Now five bowl games in last six (full) seasons! I think if we all take a step back from where we feel about this season, the coaching staff, etc. we have to be happy about that. Yes, we all want more, and could have probably had more this year but if we are all being honest less than a decade ago if anyone had said EMU is going to go to five bowls in a six year span none of us would believe it, and we would have signed up for it.
Now that we have that sixth win, it'll be nice to focus on trying to get some other things accomplished as a program (I know we have a VERY outside chance at the MAC-west still but I'm not even thinking about that). There are three things I'd like to see them get done over the last three games (two of which will be against teams with a losing record):
1. Getting over that seven win hurdle that seems to be the ceiling under Creighton. It would be nice to get to (at least) eight, and one step to getting there can be...
2. Win the Michigan MAC trophy by beating CMU. We haven't done that since Creighton has been here.
3. Win a bowl game.
