But once inside each tier you have huge separations based a lot on commitment. We might be D1 (FBS) but we’re light years away in budget/resources from a Bama. Even in FBS you don’t just have P5 and G5 with a huge difference between, you have the elite programs (Bama, Georgia, Clemson etc.) on the top of the P5 programs that are farther above their conference peers (Miss St., Purdue etc.) as those teams are of us. The further you get away from the elite programs the more obvious the commitment level$ get exposed. The SEC spends almost 6x as much money on football as the MAC. Click on FCS power teams like NDSU and you’ll see they spend more than us. In 2021 our athletics spent roughly $21.8mil, median FBS was $61.7mil while median FCS was $15mil, not hard to see we’re dragging down the FBS numbers and are closer to the FCS while the P5 elites are closer to the pros.

I understand that. My point was it goes beyond football. Wrestling, gymnastics, hockey, baseball etc all have 5 or so schools that pour money into the sport to try and be the best and it works a high percentage of the time. Things like NIH and the transfer portal make it even easier for them if they commit the money. It’s made worse by the media only talking about national championships. Conference championships are almost overlooked. It’s gone the way of pro sports where regular season championships or playoff appearances are pretty much forgotten one day after they are won. Off the top of my head the Guardians/Indians have made the playoff 16 out of the last 28 years yet most casual fans think they have been no good at all over that time period. It’s a tough world out there.

Excellent points, Burden. I agree with all you wrote. Heck, college football did just fine without conference championships or playoffs, not that I'm necessarily against either. Of course, at the professional level the increase in divisions has watered down the prestige in winning a regular season championship. Even in the MAC, finishing with the best regular season conference record in basketball means nothing, save getting the top seed in the MAC tournament, which has become the REAL season. I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating just to illustrate the massive changes over the years - at one time, only one Big Ten team was allowed to go to a bowl game, and that was the Big Ten winner in the Rose Bowl, and then the winner could not go two consecutive years! In 1961 OSU won the Big Ten as was eligible for the Rose Bowl, but the faculty voted to not send them, because they thought sports was becoming overemphasized vis-a-vis academics. Granted, that was a long time ago, but within my memory and the memory of many others. Man, the changes I've seen in my lifetime in all sports at all levels!

Yep. And I also think he will be a key voice in recommending the right person to be next, which is an extraordinarily important hire.
Which is VERY key, we've made the wrong hire so many times over the years by taking the wrong person's advice. Coach Lewis knows the challenges he faced and his successor will continue to face so he should have a decent idea of the right hire.

I know it's not much but the athletic department seems to be really marketing this game on social media. I can't remember any other games that got this much attention.

It's finally GameDay and we get to see what this team looks like against a reasonable opponent.

Good point, 5 games in and they are finally boxing in the weight class, as it were.

Also a random thought but Kent is one of the few teams playing a true homecoming game after spending 3 weeks away from home.

Saw a Moff article that said Vance is done for the year. Also Williams officially going to miss the season so Garcia will likely continue to get carries as the #3 back. He also mentioned that the injuries to Boldin and Johns aren't serious.

The punt formation on that delay of game was really interesting. It looked like Cephas snapping the ball and Schlee in the punter position. Probably just messing with them trying to steal a timeout and eventually an intentional delay of game. But still intriguing.

Is Harmon hurt? I see he's not in pads. Johns also out. Slattery and Pierre both got hurt in the first quarter. The LBs are dropping like flys.

She threw the flag because she didn't know that O lineman was eligible on that play. She whistled it dead because... Bad at job.

Easily the worst half of football Schlee has played. Three fumbles, two costing us points, and he threw behind Floriea to blow a TD. That's at least 13 points he left on the field in that half.
Also words cannot express how annoyed I am that the refs confusion meant OU wasn't penalized for what had to be the dumbest play call I've ever seen (and I've watched a lot of Browns games)
