We played the p5 and still the fans don’t show up unless it is ark, msu, ole, tn
Btw, the fans that wanted to play ga tech. We played them 3 times, 1980 and 81 at TECH and 82 we played them at home in front of 15k
47k against UCLA, 54k against Louisville on a Thursday night, and 50k against Southern Miss would beg to differ. We even drew a respectable 35k against an awful Kansas team
You do realize Southern Miss is G5, right?
So was "Louisville on a Thursday night". His point was not P5-centric.
The discussion was primarily about replacing G5s with P5s. Lots of discussion on getting Ga Tech in here. I mean the ONLY argument for Ga Tech is they are P5. Heck, you even said a win over a crappy P5 is better than a win over a good G5.
But okay. You want to throw in G5 rivals like USM and Louisville, then we are sort of going off the rails.
And I believe if you check the USM attendance, that was an exception. Someone pulled the numbers a while back, and it was shown they didn't really bring a significant bump in attendance.
no it didnt. from 1980 till the series ended , it was as low as 13k to high of 25k.

I was responding to the trite argument that we can’t get high attendance outside of a few local SEC teams.
We drew almost 45k in our home opener against Duke in 2013.
Yes, a lot depends on the weather and cheap ticket availability (there were promotions for both the Louisville and USM games) but we can draw decently for other opponents.
As for Georgia Tech, I’d think the 34k or so we had against Kansas would probably make for a fair comparison
we only had 34k in 1991 with 7th rank alabama. I do think weather and cheap tickets play a part but with now games being available via tv and internet, fans would rather stay at home. Guarantee the crowd for game day was a lot of fans who rarely and never goes to games.

Iowa State? Nah.
But if you can get FSU or Miami to visit, please call Veatch ASAP.
We certainly WOULD. After losing to them in a heartbreaker in the actual Liberty Bowl game a few years ago? You bet that would draw interest.
Nah.
They would bring hardly anyone for a reg season game to Memphis. And the name wouldn't move the needle very much at all locally for casual fans. We had 57k for that LB game a few years back. But they brought at least 20k for that game - the remaining ~35k included a lot of casual and corporate fans there strictly for the bowl. Out of my tailgate group of 10, 4 of them were there just because it was a bowl game.
We barely had 45k last year vs Miss State - and they are the mighty SEC and brought quite a few fans. No way we have 45k for Iowa State.
I understand your point, but I disagree from this standpoint. Yes, pre-Liberty Bowl we would have had very little interest in a matchup, but I think the fact that that Iowa State bowl game happened would resonate with Memphis fans. IOW, I think this past Saturday, we would have has twice the crowd (Memphis fans) that NTS drew.
To be clear, I do NOT have a problem with the B-C game. But I would like to see our OOC schedule look like this:
FCS (always first game)
G5 opponent (if we could swing a 2-1 with or a 3-2 with stAte and/or MTSU, that would be optimal)
beatable P5 (Georgia Tech, Kansas when they suck, etc.)
Local SEC

"Twice the crowd" would be 46k. There's just no scenario where that happens. There are no comparisons where it has happened for an unranked, non-regional, non-rival opponent.
Your OOC sounds fine. Here's where we disagree...
1. I don't care anything about a "beatable P5". I'd just as soon have a G5 with some connection - rival, regional, recruiting area, good road trip. Plus, the G5 you can certainly get with a H-H, whereas the P5 is going to want something extra.
2. Sure, play a regional SEC when you can - IF you can get an equitable contract. I don't want to be constantly on the road at Old Miss, Miss Stake, Arky, or UTK - with a return game only happening 1x every 5 years. And those SEC schools just won't do it. Old Miss, UTK, and Vandy have flatly refused.

Well, admittedly, my opinion of that will change once we get to the 12 team playoff. Perception won't matter "as much" then.

We were coming off of a 1 win season and no one expected us to be competitive. We jacked up the single game ticket prices for that one. It’s amazing that we drew that many people
That might have been the hottest night game I ever been to

I would move the game for $500,000 and guarantee of it being a SEC televised game.
