RE: 2023 Missouri game
In 1996 we hosted 11th ranked Miami hurricanes on opening day and we barely drew 30k.
In 1997, we hosted Minnesota on sept 20 and drew 23 k.

We played the p5 and still the fans don’t show up unless it is ark, msu, ole, tn

Btw, the fans that wanted to play ga tech. We played them 3 times, 1980 and 81 at TECH and 82 we played them at home in front of 15k

47k against UCLA, 54k against Louisville on a Thursday night, and 50k against Southern Miss would beg to differ. We even drew a respectable 35k against an awful Kansas team

RE: 2023 Missouri game
We would have at least 45k if we hosted an Iowa State. Florida State or Miami would probably sell that much, too, with our current fan base. Our core fan base is exponentially bigger than it was in the 1990s. It just takes either us being really good or us playing an opponent that’s recognizable and decent to move the needle for the fair weather crowd

We were coming off of a 1 win season and no one expected us to be competitive. We jacked up the single game ticket prices for that one. It’s amazing that we drew that many people

1981 and 1982 were both also 1-10 seasons as well if I remember correctly? Sat through all of those.... ugh.

Dockery turned it around in 1983 6-4-1 and then.....

Ok I will go to 1984 we are 3-1 and played #6 rank Fla st. To only 27k.I can keep going but my point is when we play P5 teams our fickle fans don’t show up. I would love to play more P5 teams too but our fans would rather watch the game at home than attend

Can we get a game with ga tech

Why? They are terrible, and will bring 25 fans. This year, we already have games with these teams who are better than Ga Tech (Sagarin):
Navy
Arky State
ECU
Houston
Tulane
Tulsa
SMU
UCF
Miss Stake

Bc they suck

Maybe that's the reason, but UCF doesn't suck and I would bet that Georgia Tech knew it when they scheduled it.

Georgia Tech is absolutely dreadful and moves zero needles.

It doesn't matter. A win over a crappy P5 beats a win over a good G5 or FCS any day, and everybody knows it.

FCS is off the table. All major programs play a FCS buy game. It's an easy home game and win for fans and season tix. People here like to use that as a red herring on scheduling.

As for a crappy P5 vs a good G5? I dunno - that depends. It would not be true for Ga Tech. No one cares about them. Wouldn't sell tix, wouldn't get us ranked. Whereas a win over Boise would and could. Ga Tech would be about like North Texas. No crowd and doesn't matter.

So was "Louisville on a Thursday night". His point was not P5-centric.

We certainly WOULD. After losing to them in a heartbreaker in the actual Liberty Bowl game a few years ago? You bet that would draw interest.

The discussion was primarily about replacing G5s with P5s. Lots of discussion on getting Ga Tech in here. I mean the ONLY argument for Ga Tech is they are P5. Heck, you even said a win over a crappy P5 is better than a win over a good G5.

But okay. You want to throw in G5 rivals like USM and Louisville, then we are sort of going off the rails.

And I believe if you check the USM attendance, that was an exception. Someone pulled the numbers a while back, and it was shown they didn't really bring a significant bump in attendance.

Nah.

They would bring hardly anyone for a reg season game to Memphis. And the name wouldn't move the needle very much at all locally for casual fans. We had 57k for that LB game a few years back. But they brought at least 20k for that game - the remaining ~35k included a lot of casual and corporate fans there strictly for the bowl. Out of my tailgate group of 10, 4 of them were there just because it was a bowl game.

We barely had 45k last year vs Miss State - and they are the mighty SEC and brought quite a few fans. No way we have 45k for Iowa State.

I was responding to the trite argument that we can’t get high attendance outside of a few local SEC teams.

We drew almost 45k in our home opener against Duke in 2013.

Yes, a lot depends on the weather and cheap ticket availability (there were promotions for both the Louisville and USM games) but we can draw decently for other opponents.

As for Georgia Tech, I’d think the 34k or so we had against Kansas would probably make for a fair comparison
