RE: Official Gamethread - NIU @ Tulsa at 6pm CST (ESPN+)

D-line was MUCH improved from last week and last year. If they can keep trending that direction and get pressure and sacks with just 4 that will be huge, for obvious reasons & for one scheme idea I'll get to in a minute.
Rayner & Pugh were much better, a lot fewer missed tackles. Need to see some kind of production from the Huskie backer. Didn't notice any glaring mistakes by Dolphin or Lafayette there, but Dillon Thomas making plays from that position down the stretch last year is what made the defense actually get late game stops.
Byrd was really bad. Eyes in the backfield all the time instead of on his man. Rogers and Gandy were solid, but not great. Jammeh and Brown were singled out by Tulsa and absolutely smoked. They can not, and should not be in man coverage anymore.
That brings me to what I would do if I was DC. Cover 2 Man Under. The two biggest weaknesses of the defense are the CB's playing soft because they don't want to get blown by, and the safeties not being able to stick with guys in man coverage. 2 Under eliminates both problems bc the CBs press up and run underneath their men, so no more easy outs/hitches, and the safeties stay over the top reading the QB's eyes, never letting anything behind them, and forcing QB's to put the ball precisely over the CB's but in front of the safeties. Run that on every passing down all game long so the offense sticks to running short crossers and backs out of the backfield, then when you need a stop the most you flip to reg cover 2 and the QB will throw it right to you or get his receiver decapitated.
Offensively, if the coaching staff learns that they are no longer sneaking up on anyone with the run game and that they have to use the whole playbook from start to finish, then they will very rarely be stopped.
O-line was better than last week, and was very good in pass pro.
Brown was his normal self, although it would be nice if he ran as hard in the 1st half as he did in the 2nd. Waylee did not look the same the couple times he got the ball after his long absence, but even before that he wasn't being particularly effective. Blakemore seemed off tonight. Was not as elusive as usual, stutter stepped when there was a gaping hole on the goal line, dropped an easy pass and a kickoff... Maybe just an off night?? After tonight I would like to get a look at Dozier and Creidle as the returners and passing down backs instead of Blakemore.
Tucker was himself. Rut had a big time game and should just keep getting better as he and Rocky get more familiar. Bit quiet for Thorton but it wasn't like he was doing anything wrong, just not a lot of looks his way. Should also keep improving with more time in the offense. McCray experiment may need to be over, start giving Pierre-Antoine, Johnson and Armstrong some looks. Nice night by Soraghan, he has really improved as a receiver this year. Would like to say that Joiner is a big loss, but they hardly ever use him anyways. Tough, tough ask for Gumbs to be the go to guy, on a bullet throw, at the sideline, on his 3rd career target.
Rocky was fantastic. If you take out the drops, he would have been 22-31, easily over 300 yards. He was on point with decision making and accuracy all night. Need to let him loose from the get go from now on. Pass to open the run, then you have the defense on their heels all game.
#1 thing they need to fix. Penalties. (Yes, I know defense, but false starts, personal fouls, hands to the face, and holding are all much more fixable errors) Without the penalties, tonight is a win, even with the bad defense and horrendous first half offense. Control what you can control.
Overall, feel pretty much the same as after Wyoming last year and feel the season will still play out the same way. Kentucky is going to blast us, just hopefully not as horribly as Michigan did. Vandy is this years GT game, bad P5 team that we can beat if we play well. Puts us in to conference in the same position as last year and we know what we were able to do then...
1-1
On to the next!
Thanks for the very good analysis and observations (as usual). Great idea about the Cover 2 Man Under if you were the DC. That would at least try to address our DBs weaknesses. However, I have no reason to think our Co-DCs will change the scheme. They seem to be trying the same things over and over hoping that the result will change (and as usual it won't).
In addition to it being unlikely our Co-DCs will make any significant changes to the scheme we are running, you are right - Byrd was really bad and Jammeh and Brown cannot and should not be in man coverage anymore. I'm still wondering if we have back-up DBs to replace them. I recall that when Dave Doeren was here the D was struggling and he made several personnel changes that worked and improved our D quickly. Could Ham do the same? I would think that is not very likely as Doeren was and is a D guy and Ham was and is an O guy.
