That's cool for CBS. They secured their 3:30 game. I doubt they are interesting in picking up more games.

How many will tune in to anything out side of Ohio State/Michigan, Ohio State/Wisco, Ohio State/Penn State, Ohio State/Iowa? CBS just over paid for Northwestern vs Rutger... WOW just WOW!

I'm going to road-test that theory against the 2021 ratings, in two different ways.

Case A is that CBS has the 3rd Big Ten pick every week. Case B is that CBS, NBC and Fox rotate the #1,2,3 picks. Gonna use an online dice roller and pick 3 numbers 1-12. #2, 9, 6.

Week 2. Oregon @ Ohio State, Washington @ Michigan, (Iowa @ Iowa State, not a Big Ten game) Stanford @ USC (It's a Big Ten home game as of 2025).

Week 6. Penn State vs Iowa, Michigan-Nebraska, UMD-Ohio State.

Week 9. Michigan-Penn State, Purdue-Ohio State, Maryland-Michigan State.

So Case A is Stanford @ USC, Ohio State vs Maryland, Michigan State vs MAryland.
Case B is Oregon @ Ohio State, Ohio State-Purdue, Michigan State-Maryland.

Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Nebraska, Penn State are all gonna play SOMEBODY every week. In this day and age, that's a valuable OTA game.

(Yes the same applies to Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama. But they're not on the market.)

There will never be a Northwestern vs Rutgers game on CBS.

The top 3 choices will go to:
12:00 FOX
3:30 CBS
7:30 NBC

Those 3 will choose any combination of:
1 Ohio St
2 Michigan
3 USC
4 Penn St

And one of those teams will almost always be playing one of:
5 UCLA
6 Nebraska
7 Wisconsin
8 Michigan St
9 Iowa
10 One of Minn./NU/ILL/IU/PU/UMD/RU having a top-25 season

Rights fees have risen in the past three years?

I think we've really started to underestimate the conferences agency in these negotiations. I think that building up over the last 10 years or so since the 2011 expansion, the SEC has not wanted to resign with CBS. And so they didn't.

The Big Ten has wanted to break away from ESPN and reduce ESPN's power. And it looks like they have.
One of the reasons that the Big Ten gave for spiking the playoff last year was they wanted to bring in or at least open the bidding to multiple media partners. In other words not just hand it to ESPN.

I don't think Fox is at war with ESPN my friends. I think the big 10 is at war with ESPN. Fox is doing business. With ESPN without ESPN whatever

Fox owners are one of Disney's biggest shareholders. Don't think its as much a war as you think.

The SEC does like being a regional conference. It's been one for years. Prior to USC and UCLA joining, the B1G was one also. But, mark my words: if ESPN tells the SEC to add some Pac-12 teams, they will!!! I can see Arizona as being a very nice SEC fit!!

Arizona and Arizona State are the only 2 PAC-12 teams I could see being SEC teams but I doubt they add any.

Not the same. The others were on ESPN possibly being left out. This one is about what CBS is potentially paying.

I agree. I think they go no further West than Oklahoma (adding OSU) and Kansas. And even that's only if they push past 20.

RE: CBS expected to pay around $350M/yr for B1G games
CBS had a change of mind. They balked at the $330M that ABC (ESPN) paid for the SEC game of the week, as they were paying $55M for that. But they obviously rethought that in light of increased market price. Now they are paying essentially the same, $350M for the B1G game. Perhaps adding California to the portfolio made it more palpable, perhaps there is some basketball content with this deal as well, so it's not all the one football game a week.
