Campbell to CAA in '23
Campbell is moving from the Big South to become the CAA's 14th member in 2023.

Didn’t see that coming.

That just leaves Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern as Big South fb schools.

So I guess Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, Bryant, and Robert Morris will all need to affiliate elsewhere, possibly with the OVC.

In 2023 the OVC and Big South are actually merging their football for an auto bid, I think in the same way that the ASUN and WAC did.

You have to hand it to the CAA and Campbell for being able to work out these delicate negotiations without anyone on either side leaking it to the press.

So there will be 15 CAA football members now? I wonder if they aren't done adding schools.

The CAA is going to house more North Carolina schools than Virginia schools. Wild, considering how good the Virginia CAA schools were at basketball.

Man, the big South is imploding. I know the ASUN is on shaky ground but I'm glad we got our football out of the big South.

The 15 teams actually kinda works better than I would've thought.

5 pods of 3:

NC A&T/Campbell/Elon

WM/Richmond/Hampton

Delaware/Nova/Towson

Albany/Stony Brook/Monmouth

New Hampshire/Maine/URI

Play your pod and two other pods. The travel would be pretty reasonable, and you would get every team home and away over a 4 year period

Charleston Southern needs to find it's way into the Southern Conference. Perfect geographic fit and they have plenty of football schools.

I wonder if some combo of the ASun, SoCon, and OVC take the remaining 4 members and just officially kill Big South football?

Or MEAC as well to take of an affiliate for football as well.

I wonder if Albany will be invited as a full member as well?

Ha, they don’t. They also don’t pretend to be something they aren’t, like the MAC. Enjoy your Tuesday night football in empty stadiums.

I would think the So Con should start to look at that. Campbell frankly would have been a nice add for them.

Touchy subject right now. My understanding is talks have occurred...some concerns / hold-ups from both sides.

Honestly, I think the CAA as you see it today will not exist in a few years. This has all the makings of a N/S split, and I think ultimately you will see the CAA North end up being the "best of the old and new AE" plus a few other non-AE schools, with the final lineup looking like:

NU
Drexel
Hofstra
Delaware
Towson
Stony Brook
Albany
Monmouth (Non AE)
Fairfield (Non AE)

Then add 1-3 more schools out of:
Bryant
Quinnipiac
Binghamton
UNH

Vermont and Maine all could fit....just not sure. UNH has been outward about not abandoning Maine, so there is that.

CAA football will remain a separate entity.
