We should be gearing up for two mega conferences (Big Ten and SEC), as well as maybe a third…

Pac-12 implosion could result in four conference members joining the Big 12

Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah would be solid additions to an expanding Big 12 league.

It is coming

That may happen, but even if it does, the PAC could move forward as a power conference.

PAC-12 Legacy Division:
Washington
Oregon

Washington St.
Oregon St.
Stanford
Cal-Berkeley

PAC-12 New Division:
San Diego St. (replacement for USC)
Boise St. (replacement for UCLA)
Utah St. (replacement for Utah)
Colorado St. (replacement for Colorado)
Fresno St. (replacement for Arizona)
Hawaii FB / Gonzaga BB (replacement for Arizona St.)

Such a reconstituted PAC-12 would probably generate 33% less broadcasting revenue, and it would probably drop down in the rankings to some extent, but it would maintain its status as an "A5" conference, and would continue to be regarded as a (second-tier) power conference.

.

Ok but not Hawaii.... maybe AF but probably neither.

I agree AFA might not want to be in a power conference, but Hawaii is a prosperous state flagship school with a decent football program that would help a lot of PAC schools from a recruiting standpoint (who wouldn't want to get a couple of free trips to Hawaii?).

If not Hawaii, then which would the the 6th MWC school - some have suggested UNLV, but Nevada has a better football program, and would tap into the Las Vegas viewership just as well as UNLV would.

Hawaii brings no value & drives logistics & travel for no $$ return. Don't know much about Nev but know UNLV aside from the Vegas glitter adds no value. Maybe it'd be better to eliminate another school than add. But more logical is the fact that the current PAC schools would be loathe to associate with the CA St/MWC schools just as a matter of principal. I really think it will come down to a competition based on who has the most to offer among the PAC & B-12 & one of those conferences will prevail by being able to attract 2-4 schools from the other. Then of course the loser will have no choice but to backfill with G5s as they sink into AAC level mediocrity.

That's one of the two most likely scenarios (the less likely third scenario being a full merger of the PAC & B-12).

The other most likely scenario would be that neither the PAC nor the B-12 end up raiding each other. If that happens, both the PAC and the Big 12 might expand in an attempt to remain competitive with the SEC and Big Ten.

One possibility:

Big 12 expansion (Big 16)

Baylor
Texas Tech
TCU
Houston
Oklahoma St.
Kansas
Kansas St.
Iowa St.
WVU
Cincy
UCF
BYU
Memphis
SMU
USF
Boise St.

PAC expansion (PAC-14):

Washington
Washington St.
Oregon
Oregon St.
Stanford
Cal-Berkeley
Arizona
Arizona St.
Colorado
Colorado St.
Utah
Utah St.
San Diego St.
Fresno St.

Uhhh... if the B12 would do this, then why didn't they?

Any combination of these things could happen but unfortunately (at least for Memphis) I think for the B12 it's either add AZ, ASU, CO & Utah or any 2 of those 4 or no one until the next media contract after the one upcoming (so probably 6yrs+ out before expansion considered again). For the PAC I think they retrench & stay at 10 schools post USC/UCLA exit if they can't attract 2-4 B-12 schools. I just think their disdain for associating with the CA St schools/MWC schools is too much for them to overcome. I think there is heavy resistance in both conferences to add G5 schools at this point or in the upcoming contracts.

Ummmm why? Why would this make sense for either conference?

Hawaii currently plays in a 9000 seat stadium after their old stadium was condemned. Their plan is to have an "at least 30000 seat" stadium in 2026.

No way PAC can extend an invite to a team without a stadium
