RE: ACC helped kickstart the trend of expansion that now threatens it
According to Barry Alvarez and Fox Sports President Silverman, the ACC approached Penn State in 2012 and that played a role in the B1G adding Rutgers & Maryland -

"At that time, the Big East had ceased as a primary football entity and both the Big Ten and ACC vied to fill the East Coast college sports vacuum. The ACC approached Penn State for membership in 2012, which demanded a response from former Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany.

“There was a little concern of Penn State being out there on its own and giving Penn State some home partners in its general area,” Silverman said. “I know people still kind of are a little uncertain about that today, and it was done for a different kind of reasoning. Usually, you expand to bring in a premier program athletically.”

“Here’s what the thinking was on Maryland and Rutgers,” Alvarez said, “and I give Jim Delany credit for this. You take a look at Penn State sitting there by itself in the East. Football has gained momentum in the Southeast. They have no partner; they really have no travel partner.

“As things kept moving along and they’re sitting out there by themselves, maybe there’s a tendency for them to look south. So, there was a lot of that went into adding those schools, and that was part of Jim’s thinking.”"

... and Part 2 was the bridge UMD provided to Virginia, North Carolina and Duke.

Gonna be interesting to see how that strategy works when the Ivory Tower Three are finally fleeing their sinking ship (hopefully sooner rather than later)

I bet they are among the first to jump when the sinking starts. They will use any advantage they have to save themselves, as it is what they have always done. At least it will mean Clemson, FSU, Miami, and Va Tech are free to do the same because when Tobacco Road bails, they'll make damn sure they aren't fouled by their own GOR!

Not to disagree with what you've read or heard, but I don't know even one Canes fan who gets excited about playing Boston College or Syracuse.

Beyond the state of Florida and the South, there's a "rivalry intensity" of sorts in games against Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State ... BC and Cuse are obviously on a different level, football-wise, than those schools

University of Miami enrollment (by state of residence):
1) Florida
2) New Jersey
3) New York
4) Massachusetts

Donna Shalala and Paul Dee knew which states to bring along to the ACC.

Yeah, like many ideas from Shalala and Dee, it was better on paper than reality.

If you listed the reasons why students from NY/NJ/MA chose The U, football games against BC or Cuse would've barely moved the needle.

Miami is a football school regardless of how mediocre we've been the last two decades.

Those other two, not so much.

I suspect that going to college near the beach in one of the most famous spots in the country for night life had something to do with all those kids coming from the frozen Northeast...
