It is difficult enough for a member of a G5 league to annually be highly competitive in one of those two sports. But to be highly competitive in both the two major sports ... almost impossible. San Diego State and Memphis are attempting to be "nationally relevant" in both football and men's hoops. Whether either will be successful at doing so over the long term ...
This factor suggests a Sun Belt football program could emerge as the "dominant" G5 player — as no athletics program in that league places strong emphasis on men's basketball.
That's a very interesting comment, and when it comes to Big 12 expansion, being fairly strong in both FB and BB is something that all four of the Big 12 newbies had in common, to a greater or lesser degree.
UC, UCF, UH, and BYU sent teams to recent NCAA tournaments and had top 25 football teams in 2019 or 2021-22.
Which of the other G5 schools have met, or come close to meeting these criteria?

Three of these schools (Memphis, Boise St., & SDSU) are thought to be on the Big 12's expansion (round two) short list. However, some of the other schools listed above, such as Utah State (PAC-12?), and Louisiana (Big 12?) might have a shot at future P5 invitations if they can maintain a similar record of success over the next 5-10 years.
