You're free to move to a country more to your liking, Scorp. Cuba has nice weather. You also won't have to be so worried about other citizens having a gun. A two-fer.

It doesn't matter what you strip out. The relation is always there. The more guns in society, the more gun deaths (regardless of category) you're going to have on average. It's actually common sense. I didn't even need to see charts to know this.

Again, think of it as a cage of monkeys. The more guns you throw in, the more monkeys will die. Mutually assured destruction means nothing when you're talking monkeys, where there is always a bully or someone who doesn't listen to reason in the mix. And humans are basically monkeys in this regard.

(One study calculated usage at 108,000 - but could be flawed as survey doesn't actually ask participants about defensive gun usage (Cook, et al., 1997))

Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was “used” by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies (Kleck, 1988; Kleck and DeLone, 1993; Southwick, 2000; Tark and Kleck, 2004).

Lower the number of guns in society, you'll have fewer crimes committed by guns, and thus even less injuries overall regardless of situation.

You might feel better owning a gun, but in reality, using the golden rule where everyone gets to own a gun if you expect to own one, your odds of being killed by a gun go way up the more people who follow your mentality.

Another big fat lie. An armed society is a polite society.

You also assume that our military would fight it's own people. Some might, the majority however likely would not.

You last sentence is utter nonsense which seems to be your MO lately.

That's more comparable to an insurgency which had nothing to do with how many people owned guns before the invasions. It more has to do with how much support was shipped in from outside influences after the invasion. Viet Cong would have been nothing without China/Soviet support. Same for Mugahideen without U.S. support.

Regardless, even if there is some merit to this argument, there is a proper way to handle it... like have armories within local communities that are only accessible in emergencies. If I'm not mistaken, that's how it was mostly handled by local "militias" before we had a military anyway. It's reckless to give civilians military weapons when we're not at war.

Well considering two thirds of the age range for the deaths in the graph above aren't old enough to drive, I would assume more die on a playground also. Thank you Democrat inner cities for all of the gun deaths for kids and "young adults".

Perspective matters.

WY population 550k, 18 deaths per 100k = 90
NJ population 8mm, 4 deaths per 100k = 320

Without looking it up I would bet that the suicide and accidental shootings (hunting in WY) are higher than in NJ.
I'd kill myself too if I was from jersey

go for it.

For someone taking about “the cause”, you come across very authoritarian.

reading is fundamental.

So is understanding history and how authoritarian regimes rise.

The argument that guns in the hands of the population prevent an overpowering government works when the people have the same level of weapons as the government. That was the case at our country's founding and probably up through the 1800's. But the whole situation changed in the 1900's. From that point forward, the weapons governments have and fight with were no longer comparable to anything you can own at home. It's just not practical, or safe for the population at large in civilian hands.

Take Ukraine for instance. They might be able to hold Russia back for a little while in urban warfare with guns. That is until they level the city. They are no match to Russia unless we send in the same tanks, artillery, fighter jets and heavy weaponry to match what Russia has on the field. None of this can be owned at home or in any conceivable way by civilians.

So anyone who claims arming citizens puts any kind of check on government power is delusional and arguably has a terrorist mentality. Elon Musk recently claimed this, and I immediately felt sorry for him for awkwardly having to tweet Republican garbage. But notably, he did say "historically" that was the case. And he is right on that. But it's no longer the case.

You do understand that that big bad Russian Army was beaten in Afghanistan. Same thing happened to the US there and in Iraq. N Vietnam never won a single battle against the US Armed forces, yet they won the war. Its one thing to conquer an area against a lightly armed foe. Thats the easy part. Occupying lands with a hostile insurgent population is the hard part. It never really ends and its almost impossible to consistently identify your enemy. At some point, it just becomes not worth the effort required.

Put more guns in a cage full of monkeys, you get more deaths. The stronger the weapon, the more deaths. Couldn't be more simple. Doesn't matter the year or number of years, you get basically the same chart every time for developed countries.

And if you somehow don't believe that data, well this one breaks it down by state. There is definitely a direct correlation between number of guns to number of gun deaths. The more guns in your area, the higher the chance you'll die by gun. It couldn't be simpler than that.

Republican anarchy solution? Double down on the number of guns in society. 04-jawdrop

Abolish police and abolish gun ownership. Yep, just let the bad guys have all the guns with no police on the streets. The kind of world only a complete idiot liberal would think is a perfect world.

I have had a concealed carry permit for the last ten years. I train on a regular basis and feel comfortable that if necessary I can defend myself or others. So far that day hasn't come and I hope it never does. If it does though the criminal will find themselves in a situation they will not expect. Meanwhile the person that started this thread would expect the right thing to do is let the criminal rob you, shoot you, rape your wife and do nothing because the poor criminal has been abused by society and is not responsible for his actions. That is how idiots like this see the world. Unreal

No.. the person who started this thread (me) would expect the right thing to do is make sure anyone like you who wants to carry a concealed weapon has a valid reason to do so, is properly trained, in proper mental health and with no serious background issues before being allowed to do so. And not only that, it would need to be licensed annually and have the latest safety devices on it to assure no one else could easily take it from you or use it. That would catch us up to the standards of most of the rest of the developed world.
