RE: 22-23 Men's Basketball Schedule
The rivalry with Richmond in basketball is long dead, even if vestiges of the football rivalry (and perhaps other sports?) still linger. I certainly don't "WOOHOO" this game as the resumption of a rivalry -- there is no rivalry to resume.
If the Tribe "could get good and stay consistently good" that won't magically change. It certainly didn't pre-Huge. In that scenario, they won't want to play at our place because there's a greater chance they might lose. In their minds, like the ACC schools, they're just "too big-time" to demean themselves by playing away at a lesser school (and risking a loss) unless it benefits them substantially in some other way (which in Richmond's case is unlikely).
You notice that it's only now, when we stink (last year, at least) that they're even playing us at their place.
That said, in terms of minimizing travel costs and travel fatigue, I'm all in favor of scheduling games as often as possible against any and all Division I teams within a 2-3 hour drive of Williamsburg. If the payout is comparable, it makes a lot more sense to play at Richmond or VCU than to travel to more distant A10 schools or other schools at that level. (For obvious reasons I don't include "prestige" games against more distant ACC and other "true major" programs). But we, like them, should view it as "just another school."

22-23 Men's Basketball Schedule
My problem is that the CAA provides both UR and Villanova with a safe haven for their football programs and they do absolutely NOTHING to return the favor in basketball.

I get the frustration and feel it, too. Those programs would argue that CAA and CAAF are two distinct conferences. I’ve said it before, I think CAAF, as a conference, should close its doors. That would really damage CAA Football in the near term but would strengthen CAA overall (assuming schools like SBU joined as full members). We would lose Villanova 100%, would probably lose Richmond and Rhody, but would probably gain Maine, Albany, New Hampshire and Stony Brook. That’s acceptable, to me, because CAA Football being a powerhouse isn’t at the top of my needs.

I don't know if I would want Maine/Albany/New Hampshire as all sports members. Pretty bad basketball, pretty bad travel.
We're also already getting SB as a full member, I think they officially join this July.

So far this is what we have been hearing via Twitter -
VA Tech (11/13) Away
Army (11/21) Home
Radford (11/23) Home
Pitt (11/25 or 11/26) Away
Richmond (12/??)
-----------
Best guess on some other games
Navy (return game)
ODU (return game)
Norfolk St (return game)
D2/D3 Exam Game (home)
I'd imagine another 4 to 5 that we don't know yet

Maybe High Point?
Maybe continue series with American?
Maybe GW?
And a total guess, Queens.

Makes sense. Fairly solid OOC lineup with reasonable travel. Exactly how we should be doing it. Cycle through the regional ACC, A10, Big South, & Patriot schools yearly. The schedule pretty much makes itself.

It's possible it's on the schedule, but my guess is that it was a 1 off

It’s hard not to suspect that strength of schedule will take a back seat to being able to generate some wins for next couple of years.

Why do we play the D2/D3 games? Maybe I am missing something here, but what is the purpose?

Generally we schedule a d2/d3/NAIA team when we are coming off the exam period when we don't regularly practice. It's typically scheduled to help knock the rust off.

Do we generally play good ones or bad ones?

I don't think quality of the program is part of the criteria.
IIRC, the "tradition" of playing a d3 team started under Coach Shaver, who knew pretty well what the game would mean to the other schools. Being the kind of person he is, he took an opportunity to reach out to schools like the one he coached and got a low pressure "knock the rust off" game for our guys as a bonus.

I don't think it's necessarily a Shaver tradition. Most schools do it to some degree. We did it when I played in the 90s. Like was said, it is a fun opportunity for the D2/D3 teams. Much like it is for our guys playing at Duke or Ohio State.

Plus, when we went back to playing a D1 right after exams (read no real organized practices), it went very badly (ie. VMI), so better to play a D3 and know you can be a little sloppy and still win the tune up game.

Funny enough, the D3 schools often consider it an exhibition and don't even count it in the standings. I think it would be good to play CNU once in a while also.

I can certainly understand the reluctance to play CNU because they are always a top shelf D3 team that I think could scare the living daylights out of a Tribe squad coming out of exams. I was in Kaplan the night that Tony brought his Hampden Sydney team in and walked away with a win on our floor. What an embarrassment that was.
