Title IX will stop the proposed California legislation dead in its tracks.

Everybody in major schools was probably doing it in the 1980s. David Stanley told me he took 25k from SMU when Texas Tech offered him 50k because he thought SMU had a better chance of winning. I am afraid it is got to where only a few schools have a chance of being big time and the rest mostly ignored. The problem for the big time is that being NFL prep will never be as good as being NFL.

Interested in what supports that Neely was paying for players, other than him being relatively successful?

I knew a lot of the players, and saw nothing, heard nothing, that would indicate anybody was getting anything illegal.

I think it means their alumni have deeper pockets and more willingness to reach into them.

Had a colleague whose boyfriend played DL for TAMU in the early 80's. She said Ray Childress got 5k/month.

Junction Boys (great book) implied that Rice paid their players. Sounds a lot like the outrage from Brian Cashman re the Astros cheating
