Aggies accused of buying recruits... - OptimisticOwl - 05-19-2022 03:10 PM

...by Alabama?

Sounds like a pot/kettle situation.

Sick. I wish the mid-majors would come together and separate themselves from all the power conference crap, once and for all. We're too good for this.

That's where it's going. We will be separated, although I don't know if we will the ones separating us.

The new California bill where players get 50% of revenues is going to kill college athletics... especially non-revs.

I haven't heard of that. Terrible news. It's all going in the wrong direction

California (in the same tone as Seinfeld greeting Neuman)

SEC has formally reprimanded both Saban and Fisher.

Yeah, for letting the cat out of the bag

I mean seriously... how can you value someone's NIL without at least having an idea of how much playing time they're going to get? IOW, coordinating with the coaching staff.

I'm sure it was a strongly worded reprimand. That'll fix the problem.

RE: Aggies accused of buying recruits... - Ourland - 05-20-2022 10:39 AM

Good point. You're exactly right. They're working within the legal parameters of NIL, but they've found a loophole to use as leverage to attract recruits. It's so damn dirty. These kids are spoiled. They care nothing about an education.

On first glance, the Cali bill actually seems like a middle road that could be successful:

Quote: - The bill says each athlete would receive an equal share of 50% of a sport’s revenue, minus the amount they already receive in aid packages.
- The money would go in a degree completion fund, where athletes would have access to up to $25,000 a year.
- Athletes would receive the rest as long as they finish their degree within six years of enrolling.

https://frontofficesports.com/california-bill-could-make-pay-for-play-for-college-athletes-a-reality/#:~:text=The%20bill%20says%20each%20athlete,up%20to%20%2425%2C000%20a%20year.

So there is a cap on $$ taken out per year during the student athlete's time on campus, it accounts for aid, and there is incentive for students to stay on campus and graduate.

As this LA Times article says, in California, football and basketball are the only programs that currently don't meet the 50% threshold

I doubt this requirement will last.

It's my money and I need it NOW!

and are by far the largest generators of revenue for the entire athletic department

If I read it correctly, the only way that non-revs survive is if the 'new contracts' essentially double the profits of the institutions, and of course, most institutions don't make money at athletics anyway.... at least not net of title IX.

Those doling out the NIL are probably just using the "finger in the air" valuation method

I feel like Title IX is the answer as to how women's non-rev would survive with the loss of close to 50% of revenue from the big sports.

I could see schools cutting entire men's programs, though, to make the balance sheets work. Or they could dip into the coffers as well.

I don't know if it's certain that the California law that is being proposed will be the death of non-revs across the board; people can get very creative with accounting. I do like that it gets players paid, but also has some stipulations on it that help to insulate the athletic programs to a certain extent. To your point, collegiate athletics is more than just football and basketball, and any requirement for payment should try and reduce negative externalities to non-rev sports as much as possible.

RE: Aggies accused of buying recruits... - 75src - 05-20-2022 03:47 PM

I am shocked that recruits are being bought. Bear Bryant and Jess Neely were probably doing it in the 1950s. Everybody in major schools was probably doing it in the 1980s. David Stanley told me he took 25k from SMU when Texas Tech offered him 50k because he thought SMU had a better chance of winning. I am afraid it is got to where only a few schools have a chance of being big time and the rest mostly ignored. The problem for the big time is that being NFL prep will never be as good as being NFL.

RE: Aggies accused of buying recruits... - OptimisticOwl - 05-20-2022 05:20 PM

I am shocked that it is ALABAMA pointing the finger. I am not shocked in the least that that A$M is the one being pointed at.

However recruits were being recruited in the old days, the NIL is going to split college football into pro and amateur wings.
