McCasland Will Stay at UNT After Turning Down SMU
"I feel really good about what coach McCasland has done here, how much value he puts on being here and where we are as a program. We are going to take care of him and invest in the program." - UNT AD Wren Baker

I guess my sources were right after all.

We both need to up our coaches $$ the next two years and be in the upper third of the AAC salary wise.

If McCasland is going to coach for an AAC school, I'm glad he's going to be coaching UNT, so North Texas won't have to go through a major coaching transition. If UNT can maintain a quality basketball program going forward, it'll help maintain the conference's ranking.

Looking at the way Jankovich was treated by SMU, it's very understandable that McCasland didn't want to take that job.

This is the plan. The AAC has been a multi-bid conference. Our hope is it will maintain that level of expectation going forward. Our AD's comments about keeping McCasland tells me UNT is serious about competing for AAC titles and NCAA bids. It's an exciting time to be a Mean Green basketball fan.

Thanks. UNT is going to follow Houston's athletic department model. We are both among the largest public universities in Texas (Houston #3, UNT #4). Our leadership is studying the financial commitments Houston made while in the AAC. While SMU has far more deep pocket boosters, UNT now has enough deep pocket boosters to counter most of their moves. And, what we lack in the number of deep pocket boosters, we make up for it with our incredible university support and extremely large alumni base. It will be interesting to see how well UNT follows the plan in our other sports like football.

Apparently, SMU wasn't the only program or even the best program looking to hire McCasland away from UNT. A couple of high major programs also reached out.

We need basketball to be good when we move into the AAC because it's very likely that football won't be up to snuff. We'll likely be breaking in a brand new football coach the year we join since we failed to make the change this offseason.
