RE: Basketball Offseason
For those that didn't see, Ryan Rollins from Toledo stayed in the draft and was taken 44th overall (14th in the second round) by Golden State. He'll be blocked by a plethora of talented perimeter players...but they also develop young players extremely well and they traded up 7 spots to get him. Probably a player worth keeping an eye on.

Definitely should have his first name on his jersey.

RE: Basketball Offseason
Wow Stan Heath landed a big one at EMU... Emoni Bates 6'9" SF.. At one point he was the #1 player in the 2021 HS class. He ended up being top 5 on just about everything ranking system. If you look at the rankings, you'll notice everyone around him was just drafted. His percentages weren't very good and he missed about half his freshman season at Memphis but he was hardly a complete bust averaging 9.7 ppg and 3.3 rpg. This has to be the biggest player to ever come to the MAC.

I suspect this means EMU is about to accept a bid to join the PAC 10

He is a problem. He and his dad want special treatment and promises and he quite honestly didn't live up to the billing. Because of the "hype" and hands-on approach of his dad, nobody wanted him. That's why he landed at EMU. At the last minute, he wanted to come back to Memphis and Penny met with them and they were unwilling to accept the role that he was going to have. At the end of the day, Emoni has a chance to be an all-Mac caliber player but I seriously doubt he will be a first round draft pick whenever he decides it's time to leave college.

It's amazing how unstable the conferences are and how the MAC is the largest conference to remain stable. Personally, I think it's sad. The 8 team ACC for basketball was awesome. Now, I need notes to figure out who's in that conference.

A chance to be an all-MAC caliber player? I think you're selling Bates way short. He has a chance to be a first-round NBA draft pick. He is nearly certain to be an all-MAC caliber player.

I think I watched his every move last season being that I live in Memphis and have gone to Tigers games for 45 years. I am not selling him short. He was overhyped and is no longer considered a sure thing by anyone.

I'm thinking both of you guys might be right ...... however:
I also think the final determination will come down to two things. 1) his ultimate level of maturity/reality with just what kind of player he actually is. And 2) getting his Dad as far away as possible over the next few years.
As for No. 1, this guy will have to physically mature, which should come naturally and personally mature, which will require a constant look in the mirror. With the NBA becoming a jumpshot league his size lends itself to a 3-and-D player at the very least, if he (a) is a competent shooter and (B) applies himself defensively.
From what I saw of him in high school and what was written in Memphis, his 'D' leaves a lot to be desired. That said, Heath's best teams at Arkansas and South Florida (not to mention Kent) were considered solid to very good defensively so that can happen.
If he matures.
But his Dad has to grow up and get out of the way, too.

NOW LET'S TALK KENT STATE ...
Will this team be good enough to compete with Ohio-Akron-EMU-Toledo. Guessing it all depends on the baseline which I know absolutely nothing about. Hoping one of the two previous freshman bigs becomes at least a solid 15-minute player; guessing the two transfers will share the 4-spot in some fashion, now hoping there is a SF somewhere in the bunch. Not sure 25-min of VCD is going to cut it???
Perhaps the redshirt ... or perhaps Jacobs slides there w/all the guards on this roster.

RE: Basketball Offseason
I think the question of who is getting the minutes at the SF will come from VCD or one of the freshman Rollins (RS) or Moss. The more likely scenario is probably that Gio, Carry, and Jacobs play together a lot, and those three get the leftover minutes at the 2 and 3.
For the post one would hope that Odusipe and Hornbeak make big strides. If they don't then we may be playing a lot of small ball with Thomas and Payton and maybe even VCD. No idea what to expect form Gillespie, but generally true freshman bigs take some time.

Lots of Rumblings that if MAC teams move elsewhere (Conf USA usually mentioned or AAC) they will come from Buffalo, Toledo , NIU , and Ohio.
OU ,Buffalo are always looking to go elsewhere.
YSU would love to replace anyone leaving.

NIU has moved in and out of the MAC almost as much as Marshall ... I could actually see UB and Toledo moving out of the MAC in a tandem, but only for the AAC.
I think Ohio could be lured to CUSA, but that league is transient. I think Ohio actually stays if some combination of WKU, MTSU or 1-2 of the Virginia schools join the MAC.
Actually think league stability is going to be a strong lure for mid-major programs going forward.

RE: Basketball Offseason
I'm living in Chicago and watched Loyola leave the Horizon for the MVC (where the MVC folks crapped all over them as below the level of the conference), only for Loyola to dominate that conference and make a Final 4 run while the best teams in the MVC left. Now Loyola's going into the Atlantic 10 as their 15th member.
I think cleveland is right. The stability stands for something. The footprint of the MAC is perfect and anyone leaving might realize pretty quickly that the best teams in their new conference will leave for the PAC10 or whomever is desperate for teams that year. The only two teams I could see leaving are NIU or Buffalo since they are on the edges of that footprint, but even then, I think both would be better off in the MAC long-term.

All good points regarding Stability but today it’s all about money and only money. Survival is another word that comes to mind. Let’s not forget
with Kent fundraising efforts and results abysmal, the top source of revenue after student fees is playing 3 big pay day football games. This year Washington, Oklahoma, Georgia nets $5 million or about 20% of entire athletics budget. Once things get reconfigured in P5 those games will likely disappear. Where does the money come from???
Moving to a conference with a better TV contract which produces revenue and bowl games you don’t have to pay to attend May be only mode of survival.
