Decent listen from the DNR. About the presser and signing day recruits.
ODU is ready to play a SBC schedule with JMU on it.. They are really wanting to join in 2022 and not 2023. https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/kEeDt

All 3 are ready. There's just the matter of convincing CUSA to let it happen. They have roughly 2 or 3 weeks to get it settled.

I know the SBC would prefer the other 3 coming in because while we have a plan in place if it has to be 11, its far from perfect. Someone in the West or East would be unable to play their entire division...

Does CUSA really hold any power to stop the 3 from leaving now or is it a matter of the earlier exit fees being to high for one or all schools to afford?

Per MUHerd on SBC board a decision on the 3 schools can come any day. Sounds like possibly by the end of the week.

Somebody clear this up. I keep hearing "JMU is not bowl eligible". Others say "if there aren't enough 6-win teams to go around, and if JMU has a winning season, JMU could be considered for a bowl".

If it's not the second one, why are people saying that?

I don't know enough to clear it up but JB did state in the presser they would have to apply for a waiver. So my guess is that the Dukes will not be bowl eligible this year unless there are 6 or more wins and a waiver is granted.

Yeah and there isn't a great track record of success there. In their first year of conference play, Georgia Southern won the Sun Belt but was bowl ineligible due to their transition. They appealed to the NCAA to be bowl eligible but their appeal was denied.

It would seem like the odds improve if there are no other qualified 6+ win teams, in which case the bowl game can't be played without someone getting a waiver. I could see more resistance to this if there are other qualified teams you might be "bumping" out.

Didn't Rutgers get a waiver this year to play as a 5 win team? They lost the Gator bowl and finished 5-8.

I am sure the first step is to have the waiver to lessen the transition by a year. Then maybe since we are classified FBS there could be another waiver for bowl eligibility if there are not enough teams. Just speculating.

RE: JMU/Sun Belt 10am Joint Presser
JMU is "not bowl eligible" due to NCAA rules regarding the transition. However, teams in the second year of transition (which I believe is related to the waiver that JMU is going to request now that we have 5 home FBS games), have an outside shot of getting into a bowl if everything falls into place.

If there aren't enough bowl eligible teams (.500 or better; which most say is >=6 wins but that isn't technically the metric), then obviously a team that is "not bowl eligible" is going to a bowl. There is a stated process to fill the remaining slots. As of a couple years ago, the following teams would become eligible if needed:
  • Teams that were 6-6 with 2 FCS wins (as normally only 1 counts so this team was originally viewed as 5-6)
  • Teams that played 13 games and finished 6-7 (as initially sub .500 teams are not eligible)
  • Teams in the second year of transition (JMU if the waiver is granted)
  • Teams that were 5-7.
So the correct answer for Bourne and anyone else being asked the question is "JMU is not bowl eligible." However, that doesn't mean it's a 0.0% chance we go to a bowl, its like 0.025%.

For reference, I quickly found that prior to the Thanksgiving weekend games in 2021, there were 95 eligible teams for 84 slots, not sure if that number increased following that weekend. I believe 2016 was the last time a <.500 team went to a bowl (there were 3 that year).

I don't think anybody expected to be eligible next season. I guess take care of business on Saturdays and let the politics take care of themselves! Being 2-9, 6-5, or 9-2 are very different records.

No, but they could sue for breach of contract and force heavier fines on the outgoing 3. Southern Miss has already painted over the CUSA logo on their football field, if it gives you any idea what they think.

It seems like the only hand CUSA can play is make the risk worse than the reward. But the problem is how much can they hurt them within the bounds of the laws.
I don't think CUSA has much stand on, but they are going to try to make the schools leaving look like the bad guys.
What certainly didn't help Marshall/ODU/So Miss is the new teams not being ready to go. If they were ready to go in the same time table, I don't think CUSA would be making too much of a fuss.
So glad we aren't stuck in that mess.

Good read on the Marshall board. They really believe JMU can become one of thectop rivals for their school.. nice history lesson too.. I don't think it will be as big as ODU, but I bet it will be right up there.

I would like Marshall to become more of a rival too because they do have some national recognition based on the history of their program and the terrible airplane tragedy that resonated outside of the sports world.

I just don’t think there is enough crossover between our alumni and fanbases. Most of JMU students and alums come from areas East and North of JMU. Marshall is a 4 1/2 hour ride West of Harrisonburg so even further for those living in DC, Richmond, and Hampton Roads.

Should be a good opponent though.

RE: JMU/Sun Belt 10am Joint Presser
That is what is great about the SBC East, I think a lot would say Marshall is our 3rd biggest game. I think most alum would say ODU. Football fans from 15 years ago will say App State is right up there. Heck some of the real OGs that were watching prior to Y2K might even put GaSo up as number 3.

Even better, I think JMU might be #1 for ODU, App and Marshall (maybe even split with us and App State).

I don't think there is a division within FBS that will be as competitive from top to bottom as SBC East. 5 of the 6 teams in the future SBC East played in a bowl this past year. I don't imagine there is another division with a higher percentage of bowl teams than that.

EDIT: Okay I was wrong. AAC Atlantic had 6 of 7 in bowls, and Pac-12 South had 5 of 6 and SEC West has 6 of 7. Sue me.

RE: JMU/Sun Belt 10am Joint Presser
My scheduling wish list when all members are aboard:
SBC East Games
1) Play ODU as a season ending game every year
2) The years we don't play ODU at home, we play App State at home.
3) Alternate the years we play the two Georgia teams on the road. That way, we get exposure down there every year
4) By default, either Marshall and Coastal will be coming to Bridgeforth every year

As far as the Sun Belt West, anyone know how they've rotated those crossover games in the past?
