Just sad
This has to be the final nail but I honestly don’t know what the next move even looks like.

Penny isn't going anywhere. You just hope that he somehow turns it around next season. That's pretty much it.

RE: Just sad
You hope that:
1) bates doesn’t transfer out, go overseas, and hits the gym + training this summer and buys in to team ball
2) Larry brown doesn’t go anywhere
3) you get a shorter bench that can cohesively gel as a team and stop playing hero ball
4) penny stops with the position-less basketball. Great if you’re an nba coach with a seasoned team and shorter shot clock, not great with this team full of guys who have out played people in AAU and HS for years and years and can’t seem to either get out of that habit or be coached out of that habit - not sure which
5) we keep everyone healthy
6) Minot doesn’t go anywhere
7) many other things they i can’t think about because I worked for almost 48 hours straight and then went to a basketball game

Why does he need year 5? He has had two number 1 ranked recruiting classes and ZERO tournament appearances. We have three first round picks on the court and cannot beat ECU, SMU (whose tallest starter is 6'5") and are sitting at 9-8...
I love Penny, he will always be a Memphis legend. But the guy cannot coach, it is obvious. There is no reason to prolong this and throw away one more season.

I love Penny, i'm glad we hired him, and i hope and still believe it will turn out well. However, the team is not good, and that's on him. There are lots of reasons, chemistry issues early, lack of guard play, poor defense against the 3, turnovers too high, pick your reason... they are all on him.
The team is just not good. probably more individual talent than most teams have but it's not utilized well at all, so either he has recruited a poor overall unit or cannot/will not adjust his systems to the talent he has.
I remember LSU when Shaq was there, he, Stanley Roberts, Chris Jackson.. all first round picks and the team was mid pack SEC and lost in the second round of the NCAA (at least they got there). Teams with excellent talent can be mediocre.
I don't know what the problem is, I'm not in favor of replacing Penny, but the team is just not good.

I don't buy that all.
Most of this is Kentucky's fault for stealing our coach. We would probably we working on our 3rd vacated National Championship by now if not for those Aholes.
