Not sure this Legion deal gets done if there was high probability of a spring full of USFL games at protective.
That's ridiculous. When the BJCC announced the deal with the USFL, they mentioned all the dates they would have to block out, specifically mentioning holding 8 dates for the Legion games and three-five days for an already scheduled concert. That is why some of the USFL games will be played at Legion Field.
This is nothing new, this is not a surprise and was all taken into account before the BJCC-USFL announcement was made.
Great. So what’s the holdup then?
Holdup on what? The USFL has announced the teams has set up player combines in both California and Atlanta. Word has leaked out that they are talking to Steve Spurrier about resuming head coaching duties with the Tampa Bay Bandits... What else do you think should have happened publicly at this point?
The USFL has not officially announced Birmingham, nor have they confirmed reports on Birmingham in any official capacity. Every piece of press material they have released to this point lists site TBD. There have been ample opportunities, in either an official or unofficial way, to confirm what has been reported. They haven't. Why?
Birmingham has not "officially" confirmed it's a done deal, either. Public facing, all they've done is approve the funding. We haven't actually seen, publicly, that the USFL and its backers have accepted those terms. Maybe they have. Hope so. They haven't said that, at least in the public arena, as of this morning.
This league ownership group has a checkered history, particularly around hotels and paying their bills. This includes active litigation. Given that the league will be heavily reliant on its broadcast partners to launch, and is seeking public assistance specific to their past problems (hotel subsidies), it's a legit question to ask whether this is truly a done deal or if other cities are pursuing or the league ownership group is still shopping.
Been around the block a half-dozen times with start-up teams. Screwy things happen.
Given this ownership group's history, it's not an unfair question to ask especially in a city that also has a long, checkered history with start-up leagues.
Maybe AL.com should ask the question if there's anyone awake over there.
