That's true. You can't really develop a team anymore.
If you recruit out of high school and develop a player who finds some success, they are quickly going to find better opportunities in terms of stage and money.
Whereas the transfer portal of back up Power 5 players offers them the opportunity to show they can ball. And at the ages they are, they will likely be grad transfers with no more eligiblity remaining.
So I guess, why not?
Unfortunately, you are also describing many JUCO programs who feast on first year players who are unsatisfied by their role (football or basketball) and build these perennial powerhouses of players who are expecting to jump from JUCO success to some bigger program.
It often doesn't pan out but it doesn't seem to ever stop the pipeline from flowing.

Dingle is a very positive addition to the RB room. He can run,he has talent. Hoping he is good enough to execute on the other items needed in a good RB.

Are we on an era where you don't care about burning redshirts? It is win at all costs. Players going to leave. Get what you can while you can. If I were the coach, I would have a new rule, a player is here for 2-3 years tops.

No?
Look at our transfers - a bunch of nothings minus Cox. The RBs are in some kind of revolt, that isn’t normal, but for the most part these kids aren’t finding better places to play. This first year of the portal is going to be a good lesson.
Rodgers & Cox improved. The rest of the kids not really…and some might not have chairs when the music stops. Waylee is going to be interesting.

Brown & Dingle both around 215 lbs. could be an exciting pair just pounding and wearing opposing teams down with their size.

Another “offensive playmaker” verbal. Excited to see whom hammock determines is a playmaker.

i'm not as optimistic that anyone will learn a lesson from this year (or the past few years) of the portal. Kids making bad decisions today never seem to prevent a new set of kids from making the same mistakes tomorrow.
G5 starters make great depth chart filler for P5 schools and as long as there are P5 coaches...they're going to do what they see fit to fill out their roster better than their competition.
If we know anything, young people often feel as though that bad thing that happened to someone else could never happen to them especially when you have a bunch of people influencing you and you start to listen to people that feed into your ego.
Hammock (or any G5 or similar coach) has to always be on the defensive of other coaches/friends/family members/boosters/etc. It probably doesn't take much to get into a 19 or 20 year olds head about how they're not being used enough or how things are better somewhere else.
Ideally...yeah...The lesson is learned and people see how transferring, more times than not, leads to a different situation and not necessarily a better situation (and often a worse situation). But that probably isn't a realistic scenario unless some kind of oversight authority steps in to protect the players from making dumb decisions.

I agree with most of this post. I don’t understand what happened with the running backs. Hammock might have lost those guys on purpose…it’s very strange for almost a whole room to leave without there being something else.

I don't recall us ever recruiting a TE that is so obviously more skilled receiving than blocking. We have usually had more blocker types who developed into receivers. Over the years it has not been our strongest position, but in our offense it's a key spot.

6-5, 205 LBS? Gotta think he's headed to WR.
