You could also expect, after we'd throw an incompletion on first down, that we would run the ball up the middle the next play. We would do it, and WMU was waiting for it and threw us for a loss.

We ran the ball 27 times for 268 yards and averaged 9.9(!!) YPC, and that's with 5 carries for -10 yards by Hampton. WMU didn't stop the run very many times last night.
NIU lost last night because they were playing a true freshman QB. If Lombardi plays, NIU probably scores 50+ points. It was a game NIU was always going to struggle with on defense. Add in the fact they sprinkled in some reserves (for example Joshua Earl, a backup safety, got cooked by Skyy Moore on the 4th down touchdown) and you saw the results.
This one wasn't a hard one to solve.

WMU stopped the running plays a LOT last night. They didn't stop 4 of them, including 3 long TD runs. That part isn't surprising, since they stacked the box. Just that the play calling seemed so predictable.

Ducker, Rat, and Brown combined for 22 carries for 277 yards, or 12.6 YPC. They in no way stopped running plays a lot last night.

I know you can’t “take away” the long runs. But they got 230 of those yards on 4 runs. The problem with that is that all those big runs didn’t allow NIU any time of possesion. So the other 23 runs for 47 yards stalled the offense and caused the three and outs and put the defense on the field continuously.

Right, we didn't sustain any drives to keep our defense off the field. We had six first downs and were 0-for-7 on 3rd downs on first 9 drives. We left our defense out to be murdered with the ultra conservative offensive game plan.

I'm normally with 7 on his posts but 007 has this right. Even Hammock says the O didn't play complementary football and had the D in a disadvantage.
I'd prefer not to argue about last night so much but opine about the future.

I'm just saying they got 228 of those yards on 4 plays.

It is the old Barry Sanders conundrum. Barry's rushing stat line would look like 1, 2, -3, 0, 4 ,1, 44 TD...
His teams couldn't sustain drives often yet he was phenomenally talented.
He was a homeowner hitter able to break it big at any moment but he wasn't designed to get first down after first down. A guy like Payton or E. Smith were more like that.
Anyways the offense put too much pressure on D to force multiple stops. My fear is that this repeats itself in Detroit. My hope is that Rocky comes back healthy and leads a balance attack.
Someone showed the stat that we were #8 in FBS time of possession. That tells the story of the 2021 huskies.

Respectfully...
You had four rushes that averaged 53ypc...you had 23 that averaged just north of 2ypc.

Good point ... you can drown in "an average" of 12 inches of water.

Huh...my mom always said you could drown in a tablespoon. But, only if you were in that water within 30 minutes of eating :)
I think the more telling stat was that those three runs were directly responsible for all of your points. None of the other runs, including the 40+ on the opening drive, had any impact on the game whatsoever. You don't often see that in a game.

27 runs for 268 yards is terrible run defense no matter how you slice it. It's not like
Any passing game at all to keep drives alive and those numbers would have been even worse.

WMU D can step up and shift things around. Make stops, but with any decent O, lite up. Every time by Passing.
We knew you guys couldn't pass after the 1st possession or so. So we just tried to rile him up, and thus, (ugh) let 4 BIG runs go by.
1 - 96 yards
2 - 40+
1 - I forget, but still pretty big (have to reference one of my rambling posts that pointed it out; too lazy to do so now)
Most were in those. But still, they Do Count and rightfully so.
But point is, we stopped the run, yet, the AVG was very high. Why? Well, we stopped it most of the time Well. The other times? Pee-Wee football D lol. And with NIU, they have a good run game, so even though you're confident on stopping the pass and are able to stop the run -- they'll STILL get you once in a while in big way.
