Why didn’t the ACC get anything out of ND for joining the conference in 2020 for FB?

ND would have said no and cobbled together a schedule in 2020.

It would not have caved into any long term concessions for a one year safe harbor.

The Big 10 didn't play until Oct. 24 and no teams played non conference regular season games.

The MAC didn't play until Nov. 4 and no teams played non conference regular season games.

The SEC didn't play any non conference regular season games. If Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Kentucky didn't play their in state rivals, they weren't going to play Notre Dame.

The Pac 12 didn't play until Nov. 7. Very few teams played non conference games and only did because conference games were called off due to COVID-19.

The MWC didn't play until Oct. 24. When they announced the resumption of their schedule, conference members were allowed to reschedule BYU.

The FCS season was in the spring.

The ACC rule was "The nonconference game must take place in the home state of the ACC institution," So if Notre Dame wanted to play any ACC team it would have to have been a road game.

Good luck putting together a schedule for 2020. They probably go undefeated but their schedule wouldn't have been any stronger than Cincinnati and without a win over Clemson I would have taken Texas A&M over them.

So what? My point is that ND would have done something other than cave in to the ACC with long term concessions for a one year deal.

The ACC knew this, ND knew this...so they worked out something that benefitted both.

Extortion plots only work in the movies and on fan message boards.

Yeah, Swofford followed the adage that it’s easier to catch flies with honey rather than vinegar. The cost to the ACC was material…ND took a slot in the CCG (fortunately, Clemson won). The benefit to the ACC is any goodwill generated with ND & ESPN…nothing tangible.

Given the risks and suffering with Covid, trying to extract any specific concessions from ND would have likely backfired. At most, ND could have been asked to schedule a 6th annual game for a few years…but it likely would have resulted in animosity from their fan base.

RE: Why didn’t the ACC get anything out of ND for joining the conference
As usual the ACC screwed it up...they had the leverage and instead of using it they rolled out the red carpet for Notre Dame, whose fans should have been forced to endure the fall with no football that their refusal to join a conference had earned them. There are benefits & downsides to being in a conference, but the ACC rolls over and lets ND have the best of both worlds.

At a minimum, the ACC could have allowed them to play a full schedule but they NEVER should have been allowed into the CCG since they are NOT a member. Miami got screwed, they were 7-2 in conference and should have had the spot vs. Clemson.

I think this is true. The ACC *may* have been able to get two year deal instead of one year given that the Covid impact was hard to predict back then but nothing more than that.

Nevertheless it’s still significant that ND joined a football conference albeit it was only for a year. No more boastful claim such as ND NEVER joined a football conference.
