Quote:As first mentioned by Reddit’s College Football Account, West Virginia and Miami of Ohio both beat Long Island University, who was promoted from Division 2 and now plays in the FCS Northeast Conference. The Northeast Conference caps football scholarships at 45, which is below the 56.7 scholarships required to be counted towards bowl eligibility.

The official rule reads: “18.7.2.1.1 Each year, a Football Bowl Subdivision institution may count one victory against a Football Championship Subdivision opponent toward meeting the definition of a ‘deserving opponent’, provided the opponent has averaged 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of grants-in-aid per year in football during a rolling two-year period.”

Technically, Long Island University does not meet that requirement.

There are 82 bowl slots and 83 teams with 6+ wins. West Virginia, Miami (OH) and Hawaii (6-7) are the final three teams in terms of eligibility.

With that said, West Virginia is behind all of the other bowl eligible teams but ahead of Miami (OH) and Hawaii, and will get the very last bowl slot available. Miami (OH) and Hawaii will be left out.

I assume EMU's win vs. St. Francis (Pa) also of the NEC does not count toward the 6 win min.

Probably not, but with the new last minute bowl game, it doesn’t matter anymore

A poster on the EMU board reminds us that we used a win over Central Conn. State a few years ago to hit the 6 win threshold.

My understanding is that the MAC is only occasionally sending a team to Mobile now.

Yes, per Jerry Palm's predictions, that is one of the Go5 "pool" bowls that make working out how many bowl tie-ins the MAC has trickier.

Set MAC bowls this year:
Dec 17: Bahamas, CUSA v MAC
Dec 21: Idaho Potato, MAC v MWC
Dec 27: Quick Lane, BigTen v MAC
Dec 31: Arizona, MWC v MAC

Pool slots. per Jerry Palmer, pool including possible MAC per fbschedules.com (fbschedule info in parantheses):
Dec 17: Cure, Pool v Pool (Go5+Army)
Dec 18: Boca Raton, Pool v Pool (Go5+Army)
Dec 18: Lending Tree (Mobile), Pool v Sunbelt (MAC TBD v Liberty)
Dec 20: Myrtle Beach, Pool v Pool (AAC/MAC/SBC)
Dec 21: Frisco, Pool v Pool (Go5)
Dec 25: Camellia, Pool v Pool (MAC v SBC)

Plus: TBA: The NCAA Waiver Bowl, Pool v Pool

So the "MAC has six bowls" are specific affiliations this year, but the MAC is in four other pools, so "the MAC has eight bowl spots" is quite plausible.

Boca Roton bowl is App State and Western KY. Can take that pool vs pool game off the list.

What is 'pool vs. pool'??

A number of bowls are in a pool that draw from the Go5 or Go5+Army. Since they don't have the traditional "This vs That" tie-ins, several sources (eg, CBS Sports) notes them as "Pool vs Pool", or "This vs Pool" or "Pool vs That".

I don’t know, great opportunity for the MAC to prove ourselves amongst other G5’s who all believe they’re ahead of us.
Create your own storylines. Mine go like this:

CMU probably has the most talented players in the MAC so I’m excited to see a matchup with a mortal Boise.

Hope Toledo destroys MTSU for turning us down at the HS dance.

NIU gets CC who just joined FBS and finished 4th in the SB yet think playing the MAC champ is disrespectful. Great opportunity to hit them in the face with a fat reality burger.

Every game is a great opportunity to see how we stack up.
