Continuing last year's debate regarding whether George Mangas is a D1-caliber player, Mangus scored 21 on 8-11 shooting in Fairmont State's two-point exhibition loss at Bowling Green.

RE: Mangas
It's a little too early for the "I told you so,"... and I may not be a former coach, D1 player.... I'm only a guy that's seen a lot of people play and think enough about my own opinion to recognize an unusual instinct that doesn't necessarily measure in "athletic" ability. The kid has that chess player instinct. He's many steps ahead of his own path, that of his team and that of the opponents. I can't see into his head, I presume. I equate him with Kareem Hunt that always seem to take the right step, even though the potential tackler is behind him. Has that mental sky-cam view of the playing field instead of the eyes in front view. ANd Mangas has one of the quickest shots I've seen.

RE: Mangas
ps: his athletic ability is not too shabby either. He excelled against the team of one player who is recognized as a generational player without near the same support from team and also against other very high recruits and their teams. He seemed always to get along with this team and coaches on the court. I don't really know for sure what the D1 coaches were seeing/hearing that was giving them pause. As then, I note that the D2 he chose is very close to a major college program with a high profile coach that was looking at him. I think maybe some coaches might use D2 as "storage" for players to have them in the years when there are openings. If Mangas does continue to display the skills, it will be interesting discussion if he lands at W. Virginia.
Time will tell if anything else gets in the way of his performance and abilities.

I have never been in the Mangas fan club but at this point I gotta admit he's become thread icon. every basketball season, no matter where he plays there will be toledo rockets fans typing "hold on a minute. what we really should be talking about right now is george mangas from, Lima Shawnee." even I now see it and think "hmm, oh yeah, what's happening with that Mangas guy?".

Although those that follow closely know that saying “Lima Shawnee” is like saying “Perrysburg Maumee” or “Toledo Ottawa Hills”.

RE: Mangas
I think deferring as "thread icon" because the kid did better than someone said he would, instead of recognizing a good performance is a bit weak. He's a local kid that was playing against the best in the state and holding his own. So of course he's going to get conversation. If it's bothersome to anyone, skip the thread.
We could go into all kinds of reasons he wasn't getting "looks," time will wash those out one way or the other. We KNOW there are....certain things different coaches look for, different... natural skills sets presumed. Maybe this kid just doesn't fit those. Maybe he doesn't have them. You know, those short arms, lol. Been kids like that forever is all major division college sports. Couldn't possibly have the smarts, the discipline.... Maybe they're right, maybe they're wrong. Hope the kid is a good person and that he does well. Not that hard.
The kid did good in his first outing. He wasn't the best player on the court but he did good. It's a simple acknowledgement.

small kind defensive there east? he's sorta local, and there's lots of guys who are definitely local who didn't go to UT but are interesting college players who don't have regular threads on this board. but, as I said, I think it's kinda cute how certain things create a life of their own on the board when they don't really have anything to do with UT sports. carry on with the Mangas love, I feel a little invested in his career now fwiw.

small kind defensive huh? In English? Were you admitting to feeling a bit defensive? Don't let it bother you, it's normal in your situation. I mean you really did put your foot in it there didn't you? Not refering to your comments about the player or his skills but your butt-hurt that others were talking about the player.
There are often threads which some may not consider "UT related." Your sorry azz attempts at diminuatives such as calling it "cute" aside, there will be in the future. Maybe you could just be respectful?
Lester obviously wanted to talk about the topic. Thought correctly that others might want to talk about it. Why are you so small to not just let it happen, without taking poorly disguised shots? Mature up a bit, this isn't about you.

Bizarre.
If there were a squabble about who is better at one on one or HORSE then I suppose that would settle the squabble. You don't settle a squabble about apples by throwing oranges. You were trying to be clever? Didn't work.
In this case, there's no squabble. A poster started a thread to discuss a player in a game against our rival, a few others including myself were interested and joined in and one person seemed upset about that, I suppose thinking it was a personal attack instead of what it was and made a few immature remarks. I believe that person realizes it now. The adults have moved on. You?

OK, jokes are hard by internet. It was the picking of a specific game that threw me. Couldnt figure what you were getting at or why that game.
As for Mangas, locals like to see locals recruited so it is normal to want to compare their progress much like we have watched players that leave the team for other places. I don't see anything "cute" or abnormal about the thread and was glad to see that a local had done well against BG.

For me the interest in Mangas, beyond his attendance at my old HS, is based on his extreme numbers not equating to any interest on the collegiate level. He had Jay Burson numbers with a bigger body and more athleticism. I understand the curiosity.

And I am little surprise that Wright State did not offer Mangas a scholarship, or a prefer walk on.

and I am not at all "upset" about the thread or took it "personal", simply made a comment that it was funny how others' ongoing interest in Mangus had made me also interested even though I don't really have much reason to care, which was actually a low key endorsement of continuing the thread.
