Really nice win (64-61). Five in a row for Flashes, then one against third-place team.

More later.

Katie Shumate had 20 points, Casey Santoro 16. Lindsey Thall with great defense on last-second 3 by Ball State.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Ball State's game plan was to shut down KSU forward Nila Blackford, who had averaged 18 points over the Flashes' last four games.

She ended up with just six points, but scored a key basket when she ripped the ball out of a Ball State player's hands after a rebound and put in a layup.

But BSU's focus on Blackford opened up drives into the paint by Shumate and passes from the inside to 3-point shooters.

Ball State had led the MAC in 3-point baskets per game, but the Flashes held them to seven, 2.5 below their average.

Kent State is now tied for fifth place in the conference at 7-6. The Flashes are just one game behind third-place Akron. Seven teams are still bunched within two-and-a-half games between third and ninth.

Full story is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
I’m having shoulder surgery this week, so I won't be posting here or on the blog for a while. I hope to be able to do short posts, maybe after Saturday’s game, maybe next week. It depends on whether I feel good enough to type.

I suspect Burden, the other big women's fan on the board, will post the scores and some commentary.

And you can get game results and previews on the team website at:

https://kentstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball.

The team Twitter feed is @kentstwbb for scoring updates during games and results right afterwards.

--

KSU has two revenge games this week against Northern Illinois (at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the M.A.C. Center) and at Akron at 2 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be on ESPN+ or ESPN3. The links will be on the KSU website.

The Flashes lost to both teams in the final seconds in January.

NIU beat the Flashes 61-55 on Jan. 26, making six free throws in the final 30 seconds after KSU had tied the game at 55. The Huskies are in eighth place in the MAC at 7-7 (10-12 overall). They’re part of a cluster of seven teams (including Kent State) between third and ninth, all within a game-and-a-half of each other in the standings. The teams are fighting to finish no lower than eighth, the last place that will make the league tournament in March in Cleveland.

Akron is a surprising third in the Mid-American Conference at 8-5 (11-8 overall). The Zips beat KSU 62-61 at the M.A.C.C. on Jan. 5. The Flashes rallied from nine down in the fourth quarter but missed a shot at the buzzer that would have won the game.

Kent State is 7-6 in the MAC and 15-7 overall. The Flashes have won five in a row since losing to Northern Illinois, That’s the longest active winning streak in the league.

See you later in the month.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
A very nice 67-43 win over NIU last night. NIU helped out by only scoring 4 points in the third quarter. It wasn’t the Kent defense that caused it as they shot something like 1/13. Many of them decent shots. Luckily they didn’t hurt anyone with the bricks. Overall Kent played one of their better games shooting 53%. Shumate had 15 and Blackford 14. When they play well the team can beat anybody in the MAC except for 14-1 Toledo. Hannah Young chipped in 11 making 3 of 4 threes. Kent is now tied for fourth in the Conference Standings.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women went back to their losing ways getting beat by Akron 73-64. It was their second loss to Akron this year. They fell behind by 8 after the 1st quarter, got to within 1 point at the beginning of quarter 4 and forgot to play defense and got outscored 28-20 in quarter number 4. Blackford, Thall and Shumate were only 12/36 (2/8 from 3) from the field. The team as a whole shot 36% (32% from 3). Santoro had 17 to lead the scoring shooting 44% with 3/6 from 3 pt land.

We are now 8-7 in the MAC in 6th place. Ninth place NIU is only one game behind at 7-8 so going to Cleveland is not a sure thing yet.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Kent lost to BG tonight 77-67. By my calculations we are now in a 4 way tie for sixth place. Three of those teams will make it to Cleveland and one will not. The way we have played the last 2 games it could be us. Another inconsistent performance. As usual we were out shot by BG 52% to 42%. From 3 point it was 42 to 27% in favor of BG. Bridget Dunn had 21 pts. However Thall was held scoreless and Santoro had only 2. We never seem to know where are scoring will come from game to game..It has to drive Starkey crazy. It was a close game all the way with BG getting up by 10 as Kent was deliberately fouling the last two minutes. Disappointing season is all I can say. Almost all seniors and juniors that got off to a great start and then it all went away.

Defense and shooting carried team in win streak. Both failed vs Akron and BG.

Agree. There is something missing on this team. Maybe it’s just a clutch go to player but I’m suspecting it’s something more. On any giving night one of 4 or 5 players can score big but it seems 2 or 3 players disappear every night. Never seen a team quite like this.

IMHO, we have good average players but no real athletic players. It seems that we get beat by teams that have that one near unstoppable player. That is usually a player who is strong around the basket. We would have a good supporting group if we had that talent in the middle with some moves. Coach will have to change his recruiting to keep up with the leaders in the MAC. The MAC will be getting stronger soon.

Down 44-24 at halftime. This is becoming a complete melt down. Wonder what’s really wrong? They have enough talent to be a lot better than this.

Lost 82-64. Played better in second half but it didn’t really matter.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women lost at BG 69-60 to fall to 9-10 and ninth in the MAC. Only the top eight teams made the league tournament next week.

It's really iffy whether that's even possible. The Flashes play 9-9 Ohio Saturday. But because the two teams won't have played same number of games, MAC rules will still consider the teams tied if Kent wins.

It's very complicated, confusing, and somewhat illogical. I try to go through the possibilities on the blog lat HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Bowling Green went on a 14-0 run in the second quarter. Kent State tried to catch up for the rest of the game and got within two in the third quarter and within three in the fourth.

Lindsey Thall had 22 points, including four 3-pointers. That gives her 212 three-point baskets in her career, which ties her with Larissa Lurken for the most ever by a Kent State player.

Good to see you back and the blog updated - rough season not sure whether it matters if we get to Cleveland - I hope coach can figure out why things went south so quickly after a great start.

Same old same old. Thall has a very good game but Santoro, katie and Nina can’t score. It’s kind of weird. I assumed we beat Ohio and get into a 5 way tie for 4th(assume no upsets Saturday). Guess who finishes 5th in the tie breaker. As said on another post it probably doesn’t matter. We’re not beating Toledo or Buffalo anyway.
