No, App State and Georgia Southern were eligible for the Southern Conference Championship in 2013. App obviously didn't win it with a record of 4-8, but App did beat Georgia Southern 34-17...

RE: CAA to ban JMU from championship play
This is a silly thread, as it relates to righteous indignation.

The JMU admin knew it was coming, and as noted previously, had itself voted to uphold the bylaw in the cases of VCU, George Mason, Georgia State, and ODU.

The CAA presidents are merely enforcing CAA Bylaws that stipulate that any program that officially submits it's intent to vacate the conference will not be allowed to play for a conference championship in any sport.

I will have to check back, but I think that this bylaw was added soon after UMass left the conference in 2011.

04-cheers

We definitely won the baseball championship in 2013 on our way out. Was a good day in Charleston

You are incorrect. The rule dates back much further.

Basically, the rule is that remaining schools will vote on whether departing teams can compete. In years past, there has been some very bad blood with departing schools, especially UR.

Not incorrect, as I did not represent that as fact, and stated I would have to check, and I did.
That rule was implemented in 2000, and was first enforced in 2000-01, when Richmond, East Carolina and American University left the conference.
Misdirection aside and to my original point, this should have come as no surprise.

I don't think you'll find much sympathy from ODU fans on this being enforced. We can certainly share in the empathy for the student athletes that missed covid and now this. That sucks and is a gut shot.

But, in following in state rivalry SOPs

And it's exciting that we'll be rivals again. And someone brought it up, soooo do you guys bring that 2012 CAA Champs trophy with you to put in our case now? Seems like that thing sitting there rings hollow when you walk by it?

04-cheers this too shall pass! =]

The student athletes chose the school with long established rules in place. Do you want to teach them to follow the rules they believe in only? The league is a collection of schools who all voted in the rule, even JMU.

Right, student athletes read conference statutes and by-laws.

Regardless, it's not a "rule" and is solely at the discretion of the presidents. They're choosing to be d!cks, as is their right. As did JMU in the past. But unlike those situations JMU gave plenty of notice and none of it was in-season. The other presidents voted and JMU will have to accept the consequences. Any public fallout is on the CAA presidents, not on JMU.

Sounds like this could be a good indication, especially since the caa has already voted. Seems like JMU had already informed the CAA. Guess we will see.

I thought Monken was pissed about it and said we will still consider ourselves CC then proceeded to lose to Samford, Furman, App, and Wofford lol. Hey but we beat UF if you have never heard lol. Maybe with the auto bid for the playoffs it was a football only thing?

RE: CAA to ban JMU from championship play
JMU is pissed for a few reasons..despite that we have voted similarly in the past (but it rarely had a big impact)
- we are mid tournament on a couple sports (wsoccer and lax are allowed to continue on)
- mens soccer is next week
- we are supposed to host 3 tournies (that has been yanked too)
- we are near the end of semester
- we have not announced, so its coming across as a threat, rather than a reasoned response to announcing

With all that in mind... CAA Football is a separate legal entity, and FB does not need an AQ. So, there is speculation that we may announce football only, and then ditch CAA Olympic sports after spring...

Would SBC go for that?

CAA to ban JMU from championship play
Apparently, JMU was told that they would have the votes to participate in conference championship play in all sports. But at last minute the votes in favor changed to votes of denial. Also states JMU cannot delay the announcement.

It's one thing for the presidents to vote against us. I expected that. It's another for them to say they will vote for us, then turn around and vote against us. This isn't what happened to ODU, VCU, or RU.

It was just the playoffs. Both Southern and App could be Conference Champions. I think it upset some SoCon people because that would've been the autobid but the autobid would've gone to the 2nd place team, per the NCAA (if I remember correctly).

I know you all beat Florida. That's what made App's 34-17 win all the more fun and weird. App lost to Charleston Southern and NC A&T, leaving many Sun Belt people to wonder WTF was going on. Then App starts 2014 2-5 with a loss to Liberty. Then the run begins and the rest is history, as they say.

So JMU fans, don't worry if your team sucks next year. Your coach may Redshirt nearly every recruit because winning or losing doesn't matter. It's making sure you have quality depth for the years to come that matters because without depth, you are nothing at this level.

What made them change their mind? An ultimatum by the CAA to the remaining members? Changes like that don't usually happen without a threat.
