Quote:If they need 8 members to formally survive, can they take the non-football schools from the Sun (ALR / UTA) and UMass / UConn as FB only?
UConn won't go FB only, that's for darn sure. They're Not lobbying to join a G5 conf for FB only and wanted to leave the AAC. Definitely not going to join the dumpster fire of CUSA, even with the flames being contained.
UMass may for FB only, but I think they would have gotten them in by now, maybe last-minute. IMO, if there's no word on them joining within days, they ain't going.
I think CUSA has aimed to be an FCS->FBS farm conference, and that, they can do and are doing. But I could see them taking a BBall-Only FCS team while taking UMass as FB-Only to balance that out.
Of course, UMass as FB-Only isn't appealing. The MAC told them to get lost. And with CUSA aiming to grow FCSs into FBSs as their focal point, I would only see UMass as an addition if they were wanting to go big #s early and not at 8.

There was likely significant reluctance for any program to join after 9 left and maybe 2 more. These 4 adds significantly altered that perception and thus generate some momentum going towards the positive. Clearly they should add 1-3 more.
IMO, the only significant resistance for any program to join would be from schools that have any kind of better option. But for schools with no better options, like FCS looking to move up, or independents dying on the vine, then joining the CUSA structure made perfect sense.
Among those four, Liberty was the only one with a viable FBS program, and Liberty was a pariah for conferences until now, when a desperate CUSA came calling.
So I don't think the calculus has changed. CUSA will add 1-3 more, and they will be the dregs of FBS or else FCS callups, like these four.

What kind of TV contract would they get? FIU-SHSU and Jax-NMSU?

SHSUt to ACU, LU, and SFA: “Hey y’all, let’s leave this Southland Conference dumpster and go to WAC.”
ACU/LU/SFA: “The WAC? But the Southland is so geographically convenient!”
SHSU: “Ya but they’re holding us back. We are solid core of Texas schools that will bring the WAC BACK!”
ACU/LU/SFA: “YEAH!”
SHSU: “I’m going to CUSA.”

Much much worse than what CUSA currently has. $50,000 a team if they’re lucky.

If programs exit by Aug 2023... and that may or may not be practical... CUSA football won't technically exist for that season unless they are able to coax all 5 FBS indys to join, making 8. The FCS schools they may add shortly will be meeting the annual June deadline for application to move up, and the NCAA manual explicitly says they cannot be reclassified until the August two years after that deadline... meaning, August 2024.
(Someone raised the fact that the manual also allows for an exception, but that exception also is explicit to one situation, ie, that a given school that had been FBS would fail to meet the requirements for the number of sports sponsored.)
That said, CUSA as a full-fledged FBS football conference still would be able to return for 2024... as far as I've been able to find, anyhow, there is no football penalty for skipping a year.
Uh, if they announce before July 1, 2022 this is their schedule:
2022: Transition year 1, FCS
2023: Transition year 2, FBS (not bowl eligible)
2024: Transition completed, full FBS
So if they announce before July 1, 2022 then they will be counted as an FBS game in 2023 and C-USA will still have football.
My point was specifically that CUSA cannot have FBS conference status without having 8 full FBS members.
But I am finding now that if there is a supermajority vote (2/3) of the 40-member D1 Council, it's true that they can expedite things. And it's easy to imagine there would be enough sympathy to get that done.

Tough news for the WAC and hopefully they don’t lose any more, but good for NMSU and SHSU.
Now the potential addition of UIW or McNeese State to the WAC makes sense, as it will rebalance the conference with six members in each division and keep the FCS football membership at seven.

It would be 8 when UTGRV get football in 2024. SLC would be down to 7 total members.
I figure there's still a good chance SFA gets in CUSA.
SLC 7 (UIW, McNeese St. being looked at), OVC 6 (Murray being looked at), ASUN 5 (EKU being looked at), MEAC 6(Howard, NCCU being looked at) football looks like they'll be at the minimum or 1 short soon.

Really it's only the office staff affected, everyone else just moves over to the new conference. It's like caring Fred's phones stays in business when there are eleven other shops on the strip selling wireless.
I think we attach sentimental feelings to brands. Think of any toy that used to be high quality and movable, then the brand sold to some vulture who ends production and then sells cheap unmovable plastic toys made in some factory in China and puts the same label on it. Same brand but not the same product you remember, not the same quality.

Really? Consolidation is what FBS really needs, not adding FCS crap.
All this will do is hasten a split by the major schools.
And honestly, what network will pay for this amalgamation?

I've cared about ALL of D-I and D-II college realignment since 1990. It's why I did the map for for D-I and D-II for so many years. Judy may be good enough looking for you, being that you brought her up. She's a hard no for me, I'm married anyway.

There would be no CCU, App St, Boise St. or UCF if we didn't add. I like watching newbies that can show up and play. Sure there will be teams that suck, but hey not everyone can be 11-1.

So they need to add 1 more FCS team to get to 8 conference members. I think it might be smart to add UMass to do 9 teams/8 game round robin.
NMSU
UTEP
SHSU
Missouri State? Chattanooga? Atlantic Sun?
Louisiana Tech
Jacksonville State
FIU
Liberty
UMASS (football only)
Do they add UT-Arlington and UA-Little Rock or is the WACs issue?

The G4 or G5 should split. This is turning into a power joke anyway. We would not need consolidation if Texas and a few other schools weren’t beyond greedy.
CBS Sports, Stadium, and maybe ESPNU along with local TV.
