The MAC-west is out of the question so now it is time to focus on just getting to a bowl. Again, with what appears to be eight MAC bowl bids this year, we look to be pretty safe even at 6-6. The MAC has nine teams that are/could be bowl eligible. Four teams are already eligible, and looking at the four team's schedules that need just one more win it seems likely they all get to at least 6-6. We should probably hope Buffalo loses one of their last two games (NIU and @Ball State) which would knock them out of a bowl game. At that point even if all eight teams ended up 6-6 (which I know NIU already has seven wins) they would all make a bowl based on the MAC bowl tie-ins.

Hopefully we end up 8-4 (or at least 7-5) so we don't have to worry about it, but probably want to get one more win to feel 100% safe.

MAC Bowl Picture

Bowl Eligible
Northern Illinois (7-3)
Eastern Michigan (6-4)
Western Michigan (6-4)
Central Michigan (6-4)

Need one more win
Ball State
Kent State
Miami-OH
Toledo

Need two more wins
Buffalo

Eliminated
Ohio
Akron
Bowling Green

Two thoughts:

1). We are in the top tier of teams (i.e., those already eligible). So why everyone hanging black crepe? We are tied for second.

2). If we lose BOTH remaining games, a 3-game losing streak, that is time to hang the black crepe and ask about going bowling 6 - 6.

To your first point, we are tied for third place, but also last. NIU is 5-1, CMU 4-2, and everyone else is 3-3. So obviously NIU could finish 5-3 and so could we, but they have the tie-breaker over us. I guess there is a scenario where NIU, CMU and EMU all finish 5-3 (Toledo could also be 5-3). I don't know how the tie-breaker would be done there, but basically it'd take a minor miracle for us to end up in Detroit.

The point is that even if we end the season on a three game losing streak and finish 6-6, we will still be in a bowl IF Buffalo losing at least one more game.

To add to this, MLive just put out an article breaking down the MAC-west race. We are officially eliminated.

The Eagles’ 34-26 loss to Ohio on Wednesday gave them three conference losses and officially ended any chance at EMU’s first MAC West title.

CC will be our coach next year unless he finishes at 9-3 and then he may be gone. Honestly the only place with more waffling about Creighton than this board is a Waffle House.

Honestly I don't see that much "waffling" regarding Creighton. He runs a squeaky clean program, actively markets it and has truly elevated the program. He is my dream coach, I salute Heather for hiring him.

Having stated that, EMU just pushed a MBB coach who also elevated his program, out the door. While his program discipline and marketing efforts were far inferior to Creighton's, our AD suggested that if "you haven't won anything in ten years, maybe you need to do something else". He then gave the football coach a four year contract extension after EIGHT years of not winning anything.

Wetherbee also declared in his Heath hiring press conference that EMU players were tired of playing the outdated zone defense, insinuating that "we were doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result", the definition of insanity by Albert Einstein. I must admit that I totally agreed with Wetherbee.

I, however, must be fair when also critiquing the football team's performance. The program's game approach and strategy has differed little in the past six seasons as have the results. We are doing what we have been and getting the same outcomes, not a surprise. Questioning our football coach's direction and resistance to change is an issue of fairness based on established past practices with respect to Rob Murphy. It's not waffling, just an "old white guy" trying to be equitable.

Oh and bye the way, I mailed a $10K donation to Dan McLean today at EMU athletics. I doubt that would have happened if Chris Creighton were NOT our football coach. I DO love the guy!

Great post, Jerry!!! What an awesome and generous donation!!

Great to see someone supporting their school.

Indeed. I just paid off my SAPC pledge in October. I write smaller checks than Jerry, though. 03-idea

Steve I deeply appreciate your SAPC pledge, please don't diminish it because of the amount.

I, unlike you, live next door to EMU, have season sports tickets and thoroughly enjoy working and playing at Eagle Crest. My interests are far more parochial than yours and thus my contribution amount naturally should be a whole lot larger.

RE: 2021 bowl discussion
According to this article/bowl projection there probably won't be enough 6-6 teams to fill all the bowl games, meaning some 5-7 teams may get in. That would also mean we are in no matter how the next two games go.

https://collegefootballnews.com/2021/11/...ek-11-2021

Quote:Before we get going, here’s the crazy call that we think we have right, and begging all forgiveness in the meantime as everyone is checking to make sure.

There probably won’t be enough six-win, bowl eligible teams. With 4-7 Hawaii losing to UNLV yesterday, it probably won’t get to six – it normally needs seven – with Colorado State and at Wyoming to close. So …

It comes down to the top five-win teams among the Graduation Success Rate. Of the teams ranked highest on GSR that should matter for …

– Illinois (4-6: GSR 90, at Illinois, Northwestern)
– South Carolina (5-5: GSR 89, Auburn, Clemson)
– Syracuse (5-5: GSR 88, at NC State, Pitt)

Again, looking into this as we speak – assuming things go back to the way they were before 2020 – but for now we’ll slip in one five-win team into the mix.

EMU vs Maryland would be super entertaining. two good offenses and two bad defenses are lesser bowl game gold.

As of now, EMU has the 2nd best record in the MAC. We should get a prime bowl bid.

Still terrified of a bowl game, but whatever. Beat CMU and I won’t care if we lose 50-0 in the Potato Bowl. That trophy is far more important to me.

Agreed. Next week’s game might as well be a bowl game. Most people who grew up in Michigan value beating WMU and CMU more than a random team like Old Dominion in a bowl far from home.

Other conferences will not be short of 6 win games, thus the MAC might only have invites to 6 bowl games. Thus, a couple of 6-6 team might never hear their phone ring.

Of course those same folks will forget we went 2 and 4 last year. Actually if we have a hot November we can get a better bowl. CMU WMU and Toledo are all beatable team in terms of matchups.

I hope we win out, but of the remaining teams we play, if we ranked the teams 1-5 on rushing the ball and stopping the run, where would EMU rank amongst them?

Rushing - I’m guessing:

1) CMU
2) WMU
3) Toledo
4) EMU
5) Ohio

And rank the teams at stopping the run, I’m guessing:

1) Toledo
2) CMU
3) WMU
4) Ohio
5) EMU

I predict 3-5 MAC record and 6-6 overall.

I love Creighton and will not have a pitchfork; however, I’ll be vocal about recruiting strategies, coordinator and scheme changes.

but don't bet against EMU FB... 04-chairshot

I agree, we're the only team left with a shot to beat you guys. You guys should easily get to at least 7-5.

Their "D" is incredible!

We have to g0 2-2 in the remaining 4 to get to bowl eligibility. There is no way we get a bowl berth at 6-6 with one of those being a CFS win.

I's going to be tough but we can do this!

You nailed it. 04-bow

Yeah I want both. The Michigan Trophy and another win moves us the bowl ladder with maybe better bowl invites and more options.

I don't know if that is accurate.

In one of the articles posted above they talk about how there will probably NOT be enough 6-6 teams this year to fill all the bowl games in college football this year. Also, the MAC has eight bowl bids this year, right now there are still nine teams in play but if Buffalo loses tonight they are out and the eight left would all make it.
