Yea, for whatever reason some of our slower board mates seem to be excited by realignment options in the wake of getting edged out in our one shot at relevance. Not sure how another far flung conference of scrap meat is anything other than a complete disappointment to anybody. The only difference I can discern between our new options and the status quo is that these schools are worse at hoops and we have no history with them. Brilliant.

Anyone who doesn’t understand how dire this situation is probably still thinks we made the right call cancelling last football season. Probably the type of person who thinks Bobby deserved one more year.

This program will enter free fall soon. Fan interest has steadily decreased since joining CUSA, it is now entering the free fall stage.

I pity those who actually care. Myself included.

The irony of calling everyone else slow when you can't grasp that the AAC (which added SIX cusa members) is old CUSA all over again.

Instead we are trying to somehow rebuild C-USA with Liberty and JMU or go to the sunbelt with Marshall, JMU and USM.
AAC has temple, ecu, now charlotte and for now quadruple the amount of tv money and games on espn. Which of those scenarios look better?

You want to be in a conference where the newcomers make $2M while the ones who were there before get $7M? The current deal is 10 years. Chasing media revenue is what got us in this mess in the first place.

If we were trying to have more eastern based region, mission accomplished with this move.

RE: Which of these Scenarios is Most Attractive
To be clear, if we got left out of the AAC, I'm glad. If we turned it down, I think that was the right call. No secret that I am probably the least satisfied with Wood Selig on this entire board. That said, I really don't have any complaints with how the administration has handled this round of realignment to this point, if what we think we know is accurate. With absolutely no local media coverage asking the tough questions and breaking to the public inside information, we'll never likely never know enough for an informed opinion. All we have is Baghdad Bob and official statements from the ODU administration. We'll see how this shakes out. Honestly, the Sunbelt is the least favorable scenario as far as I am concerned. Since we just dumped all that money on the Foreman Field renovation, I guess I can see why we would do that if our hand doesn't win, but I see it as sweeping sand from one side of the room to the other and throwing good money after bad.

That's not really official yet and it was supposedly going to increase yearly.

So you're pro sunbelt and at this point I am too but it's not guaranteed we are invited. It could just be usm and marshall. What happens if JMU doesn't go and it's wku instead. Not much different than what we had in cusa.

I really don't care if we turned down the AAC or they turned us down. It seems some people care more about if we were turned down or not like it was a personal insult. This isn't the hottest girl in school turning you down, its the band geek that turned you down because they already had some friends they wanted to go with.

The largest complaint for years on this board, outside of maybe quality of basketball, was the travel, no real connection with the opponents due to distance. That also has cost our athletic program lots of money to travel out to UTEP.

The Admin clearly want an Eastern based conference that would benefit all of our athletic programs. I don't see the attraction of the AAC, its CUSA of a few years ago. On top of that, there is so much instability in that conference because teams are about to dip out. Who in that conference is attractive to ODU as a partner? ECU- yep. Temple- I can buy it. Outside of those schools, the ones that are appealing are on the first train out of town. And the money situation is a joke in the AAC with what the new schools are getting. The Sunbelt has a pretty solid media deal and thats part of the reason I chose option 1.

Yeah, I think at this point an invite to the SB is best for us because I do not believe a full reshuffling between CUSA/SB is on the table at all. If we are left in CUSA and Marshall and WKU leave it will be a major blow imo. But based on all the posts it appears that we are a lock with Marshall, and we are waiting to see if it will be WKU or JMU coming with us. USM is already a done deal.

If they turned us down I can see why but I don't get us turning them down. Talking about instability and then trying to rebuild c-usa, where utep is for the foreseeable future, how could that be more unstable. I agree going to the sunbelt is the best remaining option.

Cusa needs the reshuffle way more than the sunbelt at this point so we don't really have leverage.

This is the thing. Everyone can agree we rushed into CUSA because we wanted to go FBS and we didn't know if another opportunity would come. I don't think we need to rush into a decision for the next move. Consult with the teams we want to be in a conference with (Marshall, Liberty, JMU?) and figure out how to make it work.

Per the reporting of the time, ODU got on its horse when the VCU AD told them that they and Mason were in talks to head to the A-10. ODU did not want to stay in a CAA that lacked two of its biggest rivals (including its very biggest) and the other two pillars of CAA men's basketball. Football got fast-tracked to FBS as a consequence of needing a new home, since the A-10 had allegedly told them no thanks and the post-split Big East was out of reach. Though yes, they probably were also prodded by talk of an FBS upgrade freeze.

I think eventually ODU football goes FBS; urban schools in big markets don't start football with FCS as a long-term goal. We'd probably be in the JMU spot now.

You’re a genius. Please PM me. I need financial and life advice and I’m convinced you’re the man to follow.

Memphis is likely gone in the next couple of years. SMU and/or USF might be too, depending on if there's any more P5 movement. Wichita State didn't sign on for a one-bid conference with multi-bid travel, so they might be looking. Navy may decide independence is a better deal than what the AAC becomes. Temple probably isn't happy with the basketball degradation but probably not enough to go indy/A10.

That's an awful lot of conjecture, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that when the next media deal comes up, it'll be the dregs of original AAC and the CUSA plebs. You can still make a case that it's better than the options we're looking at now, but I also think you can read the tea leaves in a way that says they're following the same path to ruin as the conference they just raided. At least ECU has nowhere else to go.

It’s far more likely than not that the 10/22/21 version of AAC doesn’t remain in 10 years, however that’s no argument against reaping its rewards while it’s here. The only satisfactory final result is a regional melding of the AAC dregs, CUSA, and Sun Belt. But until that AAC cookie completely crumbles, there will be no impetus for this. Thus our only realistic option is to join an awful far flung conference full of southern schools with ZERO cultural commonality.

If Wood can facilitate a melding of CUSA and Sun Belt based on regionality, he deserves a Nobel Prize. Two distinct conferences are a pipe dream though, because business.

As such, he is an ineffective poindexter and ODU sports remain nearly impossible to maintain interest in.

I've said many negative things about our boy Wood but "ineffective poindexter" never occurred to me. It is just too good and too accurate. Kudos!

This is a complete pile of BS. When anything at all goes wrong Wood immediately gets the blame, and usually rightly so. In this case ODU now has a much more regionally oriented division, upgraded media exposure, more money each year, more attractive opponents such as JMU, App. St., and Coastal Carolina. Basketball is probably a little weaker, but we will have a tournament which will be much easier to travel to. Baseball and soccer will be at least equivalent, if not enhanced.

Like Wood, or hate him, he deserves credit for getting us to a much better position than we have been in quite a while.

Southern Miss figures it saved 400 000 in travel with this deal. Assuming ours is this much or more, we can put those savings to good use. Start baseball press box?

#2 and I don’t think we’d lose WKU. I’d like the Sunbelt East better if there wasn’t a Sunbelt West. It’s CUSA all over again with better football. Doesn’t save any money on travel nor bring in more revenue. Just sweeping sand from one side of the room to another. Better than be left with nothing but still sucks.

Fatalistic: I care. In the meantime you can lose interest while dreaming of 2030 and ODU getting invited to the SEC or whatever unrealistic visions you have of ODU's future. In the real world the move to the Sun Belt is a healthy one for our athletic programs and I support it wholeheartedly
