That's just what they said with Brad Stevens and Butler, NCAA finalists two years straight.
And then Stevens left. How did that turn out?
Since joining the Big East for the 2013/2014 school year (7 tournaments), Butler has 4 NCAA appearances and 1 Sweet Sixteen appearance. Total win/loss in conference: 72-74.

Yea, Butler's been fine - they also had a promising team that didn't get to dance in 2020 because of COVID. Good crowds, cool old arena, good geography. Nothing wrong with them.

That might be more legal under NCAA rules than we think. I remember a definition somewhere that your "home conference" is the conference where you play mens' and women's basketball, but I can't find that in the NCAA Division I manual.
Quote:18.5.3 Men's Basketball Eligibility Requirements. For automatic qualification in men's basketball, a conference shall meet the following additional requirements: (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91)
(a) It shall determine a conference champion in at least six men's sports [at least two of which must be team sports as set forth
in Bylaw 31.3.4.1-(a)]; and in each of these six sports, at least six of the conference's member institutions shall sponsor the
sport on the varsity intercollegiate level; and
(b) It shall conduct double round-robin, in-season conference competition, or a minimum of 14 conference games, before declaring its champion in basketball.
So, hypothetically, Gonzaga could play basketball in the Big East, and everything else in the WCC. Big East already meets the criteria without Gonzaga.
Why the WCC would agree to this, I don't know. [/quote]

RE: Big East Expansion
Nothing's going to happen unless Fox says so, and they're not saying so.
It's a loaded question. Ask a CFO of any major company if they were open to a sale and they almost have to say "yes" as a matter of public disclosure and then the Internet goes crazy. That happened this summer when WWE president Nick Khan said that they would certainly listen to any serious offer and then the Twitterverse responds with "Vince McMahon is selling the WWE!"
With WWE's market cap of $4.5 billion, there are only handful of media properties that would even consider it, and it's not getting sold.

If Gonzaga is added, the conference has to change names to the Big North.

Eh, I'd disagree. That's not a "we're open to anything that makes the conference better, but nothing's being discussed at this time" that's confirming the conference office wants to look into new school(s). I expect Val has a good idea of what Fox wants and is going back to the presidents with it.

^^^^^^ This is the group.
IMO Dayton should have been added a long time ago. At the very least they are the institutional equals to the other teams added. Dayton is no less worthy than their other peers who are in there now.

I'll be surprised if they add anyone other than Dayton, St Louis, Loyola, Richmond, or Davidson. Outside shot of VCU, but I don't think they'll add a giant public school that they don't have history with.

That will happen when the Giants and Jets to change their name to New Jersey to reflect where they actually play. But since it's been almost 50 and 40 years, respectively, I don't expect it.

If the Zags come it would have to be part of a larger expansion to 14. They would need a western partner. How the Dodgers needed the Giants to go west with them the Zags need a partner to go east. St. Marys fits the bill, not a world beater but the Zags value carries both schools. SLU is pretty much getting in, its a matter of when not if. They check every single box for the conference.

Good point about St. Mary's. Wonder if the BE western strategy (if there is one) would be more successful than the AAC's?

Great travel partner for Creighton....
But seriously, I think it's Gonzaga or bust for BE expansion at this point. And the odds of Gonzaga joining the BE are pretty low.

The Big East doesn't need Gonzaga. Just really makes no sense for them. They've got comparable programs already and there are good programs in the east that fill logical geographic holes.

Based on what? The Zags flirted with the MWC for crying out loud. They used their leverage to force the conference to play less conference games because Gonzaga knows playing in the WCC isn't good for them anymore. After New Year they pretty much go into the dark and now BYU is gone its even worse for them.

RE: Big East Expansion
For the past several years, I have continually argued that Gonzaga is not a serious or legitimate candidate for BE expansion due to location. I never thought of it as more than just a pipe dream.
However, something has changed in recent weeks that has amended my original prediction. Due to other moves, it is a much more possible scenario than I ever could have realized.
It is by no means a guarantee, but there are forces pushing for this to happen. As with everything, if the money makes sense, the details find a way.

Though some might argue Butler has been a disappointment in the Big East, I feel BU has been a quality addition (which is noteworthy in that I would have preferred a Catholic school instead when the league was being created).
Indianapolis is a very underrated city that "makes sense" for the five BE teams in the Midwest. And Hinkle Fieldhouse is an architectural gem.
I like having Butler in the Big East.
