RE: Tim Donnelly
I think I understand the sentiment that not being chosen (or at least the optics of that) feels bad. Let me offer a counter.

Would you want to be in a conference that:

1. Has the best teams out the door shortly, unknown when. Lots of uncertainty and volatility. Memphis, SMU, Wichita State, possibly Tulsa.

2. The current members get $7M per year while we'd only get $2M per year.

3. Still have a problem of travel, with most of the teams being in Texas (UNT, UTSA, Rice, and however long SMU lasts)

4. Knowing that the biggest thing you have in common with all those schools is we'd want to leave as soon as a better opportunity arises.

If you truly feel bad about it, I recommend waiting until all the dominoes have fallen. It can be stressful thinking of all the ways it can go wrong.

I'm stung as can be by the fact that Charlotte and UTSA could startup and be more attractive than we were in such a short time. I think we missed a HUGE opportunity here and see no greatness in begging JMU and Liberty to be our conference mates. This is surely not the worse day for ODU but I just don't see these rosy days that people seem to be pointing out.

I was proud that we leapfrogged many schools to be invited to CUSA on potential alone, but I'm not proud to have proven most of the existing FBS schools right by riding a market and not winning, not putting our fans in the stadium and not playing football during a year that every other conference member did. To me, that is exactly why we aren't in the AAC this week and we have no one to blame but our own entitled group that thinks we get to decide who ODU affiliates with conference-wise. I'm not sure there is one other school in the country that gets to tell other schools where they should be playing but that is exactly the dominant excuse for not getting into our stadium and showing the world why ODU was attractive for FBS in the first place.

My only hope now is that we as a fanbase reverse all of the above over the next few years so ODU can finally reach its potential. But I have a feeling that the message boards will still focus on schools that we are playing vs. getting into that stadium and making it look like App State and Coastal are looking tonight. My truth is this was a complete slap in the face and some of us aren't self-aware enough to see it.
It seems likely that ODU turned the AAC down.

I saw 78's post on that. I will only say that I have spoken to Dr. Hemphill three few times as well (including this weekend on campus) and do not believe we turned down an AAC invitation. We discussed football twice (CUSA abit as well) but new conference invitations certainly did not come up so I really don't know that it is false either. I just don't see the reasoning in turning down more revenue and higher profile conference mates that would include ECU. That just would not make a bit of sense to me. To me, I just keep reading posts about who WE should be bringing in and kicking out. However in reality, all I see is other programs looking to get away from ODU (ECU rolling out, AAC picking two startups and we are not one of them, now Marshall wants to move to SBC possibly without us, etc. Hmmm, if '78 is right, then I am clearly seeing this wrong.

Yea, I agree with this. I've tried to not look at the message boards because of the roller coaster from everyone's rumor mill, but as you can see, that strategy lasted a matter of hours and here I am. I really am not stressing though because in the end ODU will prove itself to be what it really is either way. If we're really going to hit our potential, we'll be a known, respected brand giving the 757 area a program to showcase nationally. If not, we'll go back to that small time, lesser-known Little Engine That Could while playing games against W&M, UR, and other smaller enrollments telling everyone we meet about us and how much potential we have. Time will tell but we have no control over who invites us. We can only show up or not. In the meantime, I'm enjoying what they got in Boone right now--energy and pride.

It will work for us if we can save CUSA and get App/Coastal. It will be a wash if we move to the SB and trade the CUSA dead weight with theirs.

RE: Tim Donnelly
But who is doing all this university trading? Are the Presidents and Boards of these schools even involved? To me, I have never followed how this would or could get done. Put another way, if someone in Judy's office in Dallas was talking with someone in the Sun Belt office in New Orleans about something that involved trading ODU, do you all think we'd just roll with it because they thought we were just "dead weight"?

I do believe that is what Wood has been pitching in the media and in meetings since the pandemic began and is getting nowhere because there is no one that has anywhere near that kind of influence with multiple schools. But it wouldn't be terrible if I'm wrong.

Tim said today he thinks we’re a sleeping giant for the ACC/P5 in 10-20 years based on our revenue numbers.

I was listening to that podcast too and I heard him say that.
I hope he's right.

We have the FBS coaching staff, but not playing in 2020 really hurt the Monarchs. Look at this season and honestly, this team is 200 penalty yards away from being 4-3 - not even mentioning had they started playing earlier in the games where they lost, those outcomes may have been different too.

It seems this season, ODU will rebuild and figure out how to not beat itself!

It would be crazy if they boys won out the remainder for the season....

Nice, like him much better. Pretty cool he was a QB at Delaware and played ODU back in the FCS days.

Thank God cattles is gone. Hated him. I doubt I ever listened to more than 15 minutes of his horrible voice. Always felt like listening to someone scratching a chalkboard.

I had stopped listening to espn radio. When they started promoting Mike Greenburp I gave up. The people who replaced Golic and Wingo are terrible. I’ve switched to Fox Sports Radio. Afternoon show has Rich Eisen. But I will give Donnelly a try.

I listen to ESPNU exclusively now, but I think that is available only online or Sirius/XM

Terrible news for us. A latin station has been bleeding over 94.1 for a few days now while I'm out in southern VB/ Chesapeake.

I for one am glad Donnelly is gone. Tried to listen, but couldn't. Too boring and imitated Cattles style instead of being himself I felt. Only reason he talked ODU is because the station pushes that with guests like Wood and Rahne.

I also told a friend of mine he wouldn't hold that spot longer than 2 years and turns out I was right. They need to hire someone that has the local interest in mind. But good luck with that if you ask me.

Maybe we know a certain podcaster who would be a good fit...
