Revenue vs expenses, 2022
Va Pilot reports today that ODU had $53.2 mil in revenue and 51.91 in expenses for 2022.
Would have been first place if stayed in CUSA. These numbers compare very well in SBC as well.
My question is: Are we getting the results we should expect? People acknowledge Selig is a very good fundraiser, but is he a very good judge of coaching talent and is he too slow to pull the pin on underachieving coaches?

Some schools do more with less. See Southern Miss for example. Some schools do less with more. Unfortunately, that's been ODU as of late. Wood is good at raising money. However, the ROI on the money is pretty poor in terms of championships won, or even rivalry games won, per dollar spent.

I wouldn't recommend taking too much of a position from the budgets USA Today puts out due to the different state rules on reporting. Virginia requires us to put a lot of administrative cost under athletics that other states would put under their university expenses. I would suggest this site instead since it goes a little deeper into the numbers:

https://knightnewhousedata.org/

If you use that, you'll see we pay less than the median for head football coaches salaries compared to the rest of the Sun Belt:

SUN BELT CONFERENCE MEDIAN--$3,228,067
OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY--$2,959,296

You will also see that we're barely above the median for total football spending for the Sun Belt, which doesn't include JMU, Marshall or Southern Miss (since it was done for our last year in CUSA-meaning it also included our elevated travel expenses):

SUN BELT CONFERENCE MEDIAN--$11,995,591
OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY--$12,518,823

The figures I quoted are Knightnewhousedata. It also looks like for 2022 ODU ended in the black

Click on the graph for Total Athletics Related Debt.

This will show you where our challenges are at.

Fair enough. We have a large portion of our budget going towards administrative costs, debt service and tuition. Focusing on total expenses without mentioning where the money goes gives a false impression that we are playing with a lot more money than our peers. Which is why I shared the total football budget and coaches salaries comparisons.

Your point is well taken, as I think it appears we have a 50K surplus at the end of 2022. If we subtract the expenses from the revenue we still look profitable on the balance. Maybe that is why we keep Jones and Wlder for a long time and couldn’t afford hiring a more established coach. Wood does a good job, as a salesman for ODU.Maybe the president could move him to be in charge of fundraising and hire a decent AD that knows sports.

Both use the same source for the numbers which is what is self reported to the NCAA by schools. I agree that the Knight Foundation site is more useful though. The financial reports themselves for all VA schools can be found at the public auditors website. Here’s ours for the most recent year.
