Yeah, I must be misreading that.

You know many years ago, a current Big 12 school once pitched its entire fan base stay in Tunica for the Mobile Bowl. That pitch ended up becoming part of the reason the SBC got mobile as a bowl tie in.

Suffice to say, people will associate anything as close, even if its not.

TCU, who played in the first two Mobile Bowls just before coming into C-USA for a cup of coffee before heading to the MWC. The 2000 game was one of Southern Miss’ better bowl wins.

(09-27-2021 07:47 PM)chiefsfan Wrote:  Since everyone likes to give names, I won't give names. All of these are the latest that I have been told when it comes to SBC realignment, however, I'm not going to specifically name any team in this thread. I'll leave it to you message board detectives to figure out who I'm referring to

I mean, why not, its not like the SBC is going to make a move before late October or anything...

1. Realignment is for the birds. When you go through the list of teams who have had conversations with the SBC, you find a bird mascot or something similar is a trait many of these schools share in common. In fact, I dare say the league's own dream scenario involves the conference's number of bird mascots doubling, or nearly doubling, depending what is classified as a bird.

2. You know that one kid in your class that you invite to your birthday party who then spends the next day explaining to you who you should also be inviting to your party? Well, chances are Keith Gil knows all about that kid now since we have a targeted school for expansion that is trying to tell us who we should invite to the league.

3. We have spoken to the Mouse, and the mouse has told us what they see as value among different options. The leagues current plan is 12, however if multiple schools that are listed among the most valuable by the Mouse become available, than 14 becomes very possible.

4. As of last update (things change quickly) 5 teams have made full pitches to the Sun Belt as to why they deserve to be invited to our private club. One of those teams is no longer under consideration, so boo to them. However I expect we'll get another pitch soon. I am unsure of the media value of all of those teams, however I can say that one of them has a very popular mascot that has appeared in some "This is Sportscenter" ads from the past. If you guessed that 4 of them were from the same league...you win a cookie.

5. There are teams who haven't made pitches yet who have reached out to the SBC. At least two of those teams are currently not sponsoring FBS football. I expect one of those to get a full pitch. In addition, roughly half of one FBS league has reached out. Its probably easier to name the schools that haven't in that league.

6. When making plans for traveling for College Football Saturday's in 2023, you should probably stay in the actual town for one of our new invites, but hey, Tunica makes an easy road trip with that game as well.

“A bird or something similar.”

Liberty or UNT? Both have eagle logos despite not having birds technically as their mascot name.

I’d assume the two FCS programs are either JMU, Jacksonville State or Missouri State. I can’t think of any others out there who are in a “ready to go” position unless the situation has changed at ‘Nooga and/or EKU.

Mascot hint is definitely WKU.

Sounds like CUSA is on the verge of collapse once the AAC, SB and MW make their moves.

If C-USA is comprised of trainwreck programs, do we really want to take many of their programs?

But if we MUST add four, I guess throw in UTSA and WKU.

JMU, Jacksonville State, and Sam Houston State are going to be the rebuilding blocks for what remains of C-USA.

Marshall wants a buddy. WKU makes a lot of sense, and those two would be a body blow to CUSA

Honestly?

Marshall [nor any other CUSA school] is in no position to make demands on the Sun Belt. There is no one school in CUSA which adds enough value to the SBC to cause the conference to either cave to any demand about who to add or to hold a spot open just in case the school does not get an AAC or MWC invitation.

Oh I completely agree. A bit of humble pie for the herd is in order. We helped them with process that last Thursday.

The way I see it, there are several CUSA schools that would add value to the Sun Belt; each for different reasons, but none that adds so much that they have any leverage on the conference.

UAB: good football and MBB, large market, but low interest in market, good geography, Sun Belt is second choice to them [AAC first]
USM: great tradition, but currently down in football and MBB, small market, but high interest in market, great geography, Sun Belt is first choice to them
FAU: good football, large market, but very low interest in market, poor geography, Sun Belt is second choice to them [AAC first]
WKU: good football and MBB, small market, but high interest in market. fair geography, doesn't really want to be in the SBC, just wants out of CUSA
MU: good football and MBB, small market, but high interest in market, fair geography, doesn't really want to be in the SBC, just wants out of CUSA
LTU: good football and MBB, small market, fair interest in market, poor geography, does not want to be in the SBC, just wants out of CUSA
UNT: meh football and MBB, large market, very low interest in market, good geography, Sun Belt is second choice to them [MWC first]
UTSA: good football, large market, very low interest in market, good geography, Sun Belt is second choice to them, maybe third [AAC, MWC]

USM plus any three of the others the mouse likes would help the SBC in its quest to be the top G5 conference.

Now if the SBC can lure SMU or Memphis, they move to the head of the list; offers from ECU or Tulane would also likely be accepted. No, I don't think that will happen.

RE: This week's Intentionally ambiguous SBC expansion rumors
1) Who is Mad Jim's son?

2) Bird teams I can think of: UTSA, Rice, North Texasish (can't see it), FAU, Jax State. Who am I missing?

3) Is Sam Houston State a possibility for an FBS move up? If so, that's what a depleted C-USA is for.

4) What is so appealing about Missouri State? It seems like it's been forever since they made the Big Dance, and there is nothing special about their football. Again, C-USA.

I like how over on the CUSA boards some are suggesting reloading by taking Texas State away from us to compensate losing Rice, UTSA and NT.

This is the easiest least disruptive add to plug in with UALR and UTA likely leaving

Assuming UAB leaves as well and the MWC gets some Texas schools too, this sets up CUSA as a bunch of eastern schools, LA Tech, and maybe a Texas school

its not bad, i think i'd prefer UTSA to FAU, gives us a nice travel partner for TXST and a rival for them. Maybe it can awaken their FB program.

I'd assume ODU and/or WKU.
