UT Tennis 2021-22
Rocket Women participating in the ITA regionals this week, and did quite well according to:
https://utrockets.com/news/2021/9/25/wom...onals.aspx
The doubles team of Cassie Alcala and Sloane Teske defeated the number 1 seeds from OSU to advance to the ITA Super-Regionals next month. Reportedly the 1st time any UT player has advanced to the Super-Regionals. Way to go! Always great to see a win over that team in Columbus, in any sport.

RE: UT Tennis 2021-22
Rockets got a verbal commit today from 2022 4-star prospect Sanjana Tallamraju from Munster, IN. She is the younger sister of current Rocket Shalini Tallamraju.
You may recall that in 2020, UT signed their highest ranked recruit ever in Cassie Alcala from Pickerington. At the time of her signing, I believe she was reported to be the 77th ranked recruit in the country, but it looks like she got as high as #60. This new verbal does not appear to be far behind, as one recruiting service has her ranked #81, and as the #13 player in the Great Lakes region. Her older sister, and other current Rocket Sloane Teske were also 4-star prospects, although not ranked quite so high. The future of Rocket tennis sure is looking bright.

RE: UT Tennis 2021-22
Rocket women opened their season in Florida, playing at FGCU. They went 1-1, losing to FGCU 5-2, and beating Liberty 4-2. Rockets #1 and 2 players (Alacala and Teske) both won both of their matches.
They should be in contention for a MAC championship this year.

RE: UT Tennis 2021-22
Women's tennis is quietly working on a really nice season so far. After losing the season opener to FGCU, they have won 6 straight. Two matches were 7-0 sweeps and they beat Horizon league defending champs UIC 5-2. Reportedly the ladies have won 10 straight at home.
Men have played a much tougher schedule, and are 1-4, with the only win over Bucknell.

RE: UT Tennis 2021-22
UT's women's team got a nice win today 4-3 over West Virginia on the road. They got a little help in that it looks like one of WVU's players suffered an injury in the doubles and then had to forfeit a singles. That brings UT up to 7-2 on the season. Their winning streak was stopped last week in a 3-4 loss to Cincinnati in Cleveland.
They play George Washington tomorrow, and then have a trip out to Cali for two matches before MAC play starts near the end of March.
The men are 5-4 and have won their last 4 including wins this week over IUPUI and Northwestern Ohio.

Oh, and I also note that the UT women announced they got a mid-season transfer from St. Louis, Mariona Perez, who is originally from Spain. Interesting that she said she chose UT in part because of its MA in Economics program
https://utrockets.com/news/2022/2/21/wom...eason.aspx
Looks like she will not play this year, but be eligible next year, but I must admit I must not understand the transfer rules, as according to her bio at St. Louis, that was already her third school - previously at Pitt and also Louisiana-Lafayette. I thought you only got one transfer without having to sit out a year. But, maybe since she is coming to UT as a grad transfer, that no longer applies. I dunno.

RE: UT Tennis 2021-22
Toledo swept all the MAC player-of-the week honors this week, for both the women's and men's teams. That's pretty cool.
Sloan Teske - Women's singles
Cassie Alala and Julia Kuszynski - Women's doubles
Pawit Sornlaksup - Men's singles
Pawit Sornlaksup and Marko Galic - Men's doubles

Rocket women are ranked nationally for the 1st time in history!
Now, don't get all too excited because it turns out, tennis ranks the top 75 teams via some strange computer algorithm that I couldn't really make heads nor tails of from the description. But, nevertheless, UT comes in at #75 this week.

Still, first time ever? Not bad. Think of how many D1s in Fla, Cali, Texas, Arizona. . .those schools usually dominate the rankings along w/usual P5 suspects further north. For a MAc team to sneak in is pretty good.

Rocket Men finish the regular season 14-8 & 7-3 in the MAC. That's good for the 2nd seed going into the MAC tourney. They will play #3 Ball State on Saturday, at host WMU.
Women still have a week left in the regular season. Rockets are tied for 1st in the East with Miami at 6-2. Yeah, I have no idea why there are divisions in women's tennis when there are only 8 teams.

UT Ladies compete in the Semi-Finals of the MAC Tourney today against perennial MAC powerhouse Miami, starting at 2PM. UT finished the regular season in 3rd, behind regular season champs Ball State, and Miami.
Like the Men, UT captured the MAC POY title, as UT Sophomore Cassie Acala took the honor. She's joined on 1st team all-MAC by Sloan Teske.
Match is supposed to be broadcast on ESPN3

RE: UT Tennis 2021-22
And it's a disappointing double for the Rockets today, as the ladies join the men's golf, and lose a very close match to BSU 3-4. Watched parts of it and boy, Ball State plays a horribly ugly brand of tennis, but the Rockets could not take advantage.
So close after all these years, and they should get better next season, bringing in their highest rated recruit ever, and an experienced transfer from St. Louis, so here's hoping for a championship in 23.
