Those are some guarded words. When the possibility of FBS was moving through Villanova, their coach was almost explicit with his recruits it would happen. And it worked with bringing talent in. Until the move up didn’t happen.

Doesn't James Madison - in the face of withering competition - have arguably the worst athletic budget in the entire country, with something like an 80% subsidy rate and more than $40 million in annual deficits that require subsidies?

This might sound bad to some, but increased enrollment is revenue too, even if student fees show up on the "deficit" end.

I wouldn’t think that’s a bad group for the SBC. I would struggle wanting to be in the same conference as the bottom of the SBC but it may work out

So is the SBC really wanting to go to 14?

Eh, in 2012, JMU enrollment was 19,550 undergrads. In 2020 it was 19,727 undergrads, essentially flat.
During that time, athletic expenditures have risen from $35m to $58m.
That seems like a lot more spending - student fees basically - for very little ROE ("return for enrollment") to me.

May be a good argument against spending to be an FCS headliner. If you're going to run what's basically an FBS budget already, might as well bring in bigger names and get the associated TV exposure that you're not getting in the CAA. I could definitely see the argument that it's better to either be Radford or be ODU, but that the "big fish in a little pond" model doesn't pay out.

Undergrad Enrollment in 2012 was 18,107....19,927 in total
Undergrad Enrollment in 2020 was 19,727....21,594 in total
I love the fee narrative. It's been explained WHY JMU (and Va schools in general) has higher fees. Yet, time and time again, it gets brought up on this message board.
At the end of the day, the only comparable statistic is total cost/yr.
USF: In state $23,466 Out of State $34,360
JMU: In State $23,952 Out of State $ $40,878
Georgetown: $76,000
