Boys, I think the only thing that keeps the Herd out is an AAC invite.
Or possibly App taking an AAC invite
i'm assuming if App gets an AAC invite, Marshall has already accepted one or will be offered one.

I honestly don't think SBC or AAC either one looks that appealing to Marshall without App St. That's not a knock on any of the SBC schools but we have a long history with App and relatively close to each other (less than 5 hours).

I'm beginning to think this was a bunch of clickbait.
This is probably just one of many possibilities being thrown around. Journalists are likely hearing a lot of the same rumors but are less likely to print them until there’s more certainty. A guy on a message board or Twitter who knows a big time donor at those school who was told that their buddy was told that something might happen will write it down as a lock. Somethings going to happen, no doubt about that. When it gets closer to settled we’ll start hearing the leaks from more reliable sources.
The "source" was a suspect anonymous Twitter account, #JMUGameday.
It appears that the information is basically a compilation of speculation from the JMU CSNBBS boards.
I don't believe that JMU is going to move up.
JMU has a huge (for FCS) athletic budget that has very little room for reallocation or manipulation. Audited athletic expenditures in 2020 were $34,145,928.
It is already at the minimum number of sports programs allowed for participation in Div 1, so there is really nowhere to cut expenditures.
A move up would require exit and entrance fees(could be waived), more travel expenses, more scholarships, and more coaches/support staff(football). This would also have the effect of introducing Title IX issues, which could lead to significantly greater expenses.
Further, Virginia law (the Cox Bill) would require JMU to decrease it's reliance on student fees. Presently it relies on student fees to fund about 70% of it's athletic budget.
It would have to reduce that to 55% under the proscriptions of the Cox Bill.
Like most of us, JMU had a Covid related athletic revenue shortfall, $5.5 million in 2020.
JMU has a sweet deal in FCS as one of less than a handful dominant football programs. I suspect the the majority of casual fans, alumni, and the admininstration/BOV are perfectly satisfied with the status quo.
In any event, Virginia law (Cox) requires legislative approval for a program to move up from FCS to FBS, so we will know in advance if anything is coming.
Don’t listen to anything ‘78 ever says about jmu.
He’s been on here for a decade trying to act like he knows all about jmu when he knows absolutely nothing about what goes on within our department and school.

I think “working together” is not the right term. App will not make a move without a full understanding of what other teams would be invited. I think regional rivalries are critical to AppState. Marshall and ECU (maybe in addition to ODU) in the same league would trump the SBC, I believe. I also believe that App sees an opportunity to be the aggressor and get Marshall and another school in VA to join the SBC. Both really accomplish the same goal of strengthening the league and adding regional rivals in each package, but not having to pay exit and entry fees would be the hat trick.
The problem is getting schools to step up before the AAC makes their moves. If this fails, well, if you can’t beat them, join them.
If App knew they could get an ESPN TV contract locked up for similar money, if they knew the SBC was willing to waive the Exit fee requirements, and they had the right support among like minded schools, I fully believe they'd start an Eastern based league The problem App has is that in order to form an Eastern based league, they'd need the Western SBC schools to be fine letting them go without a fight, and I see it as highly unlikely that AState/ULL would willingly allow this to happen, because both lose a lot in a Geographic realignment
I find it highly unlikely that they will be able to get any of those agreements.
From a Southern Miss perspective, it would help with our decision if the Sunbelt would get together today and sign a five year grant of rights. The Sunbelt would be the only g5 with that kind of stability, and give it the opportunity to strike first in conference realignment It would possibly help in poaching teams from the aac .
The Belt might poach from CUSA, but you ain’t poaching from the AAC. Yeah, they just took a serious hit, but what’s left in that conference still thinks they’re some special mix (P6) still superior to the G5. So, no . . . I don’t see any of those programs looking to move “down.”
IF, and that is a giant IF, ECU could get over themselves and look down the road to what the AAC might potentially look like in a few years they would be knocking down the SB's door.

However, IF the SB brings in Marshall & USM the TV dollars will surely go up. I just have a gut feeling ESPN is pulling the strings on this and if they want it to happen it will. They're probably grouping schools where they want them to be.

ESPN has to be pulling all the strings. I wouldn’t be surprised if they laid out four or five realignment plans to Gill each with a different dollar amount.

Rumors on the ground in our area are saying that WVU will be going to the ACC soon, as in the next few weeks soon. I think WVU ends up in the ACC eventually, but I'm not sure if it will be that soon or not.
If that does happen then I would imagine Memphis will be heading to the Big 12 to replace them. The AAC doesn't look nearly as good without Memphis.

We should give them some time to figure that out. Invite Marshall and USM / ODU and then wait a couple of years and see if the grass starts to look greener.

I agree. This is all so fluid. Without Memphis the AAC is down to 7 and VERY poachable. Invite ECU, USF, Marshall, and USM and see the chaos ensue. We could charge millions for #15 and 16.

RE: "Source" says Marshall, USM, ODU, JMU to Sun Belt
To the best of my knowledge, in the past the Sun Belt has deferred entry fees on more than one occasion. For example if it is $2 million, spreading it over four years by withholding $500,000 of the payment owed if the school were to receive a full share.
When FIU joined there was a time crunch (the two year grace period didn’t exist then) and the conference advanced them their ASun early exit fee so they wouldn’t have to play an extra year in the ASun and deducted it from their payout over a couple years.
We obviously can’t pay a $30 million for “travel compensation” like Big Ten did to get Maryland’s exit covered, but if USM needs a bit of assistance (not the whole ball of cash) the league can help out if they think USM is worth it.

The word here at Ga Southern is still that no one is leaving the Belt and we are adding 2 with an outside chance at 4. Maybe that is just wishful thinking on our part. Clearly we (GS) aren’t going anywhere. So I guess we wait and see. I can fully believe ESPN is playing a part in shaping the future Sun Belt

ECU is still trying to get in the Big East. They still think it's 1990 and the BE will pick them for the last spot over VA Tech.

Ive said all along that Houston, BYU and UCF are going to get the rug pulled out from under them and well Cincy is going to get fooled for the 2nd time. When it's all said and done Baylor could be the only remaining B12 Original left.

There were reports that the PAC 12 was very very close to adding TCU. Reports are starting to go around again that the PAC 12 may still add teams after this football season. The WVU to ACC thing only becomes true if Notre Dame agrees to join. That will depend on the new playoff structure and how hard it will be to get a playoff spot as an indy. The Kansas AD said last week they are still looking around at all options. The Big 12 will eventually be the AAC with some left over Big 12 teams.
