On other threads, we've discussed how New Mexico was a better candidate for the B12 in the 90's than today. In some ways, CSU is in the same boat. They have the institutional characteristics and a new stadium, but their football program has languished for the last 20 years.

The state and the Denver metro have grown, but it's a pro market. CSU is in line behind the Broncos, the other Denver pro teams, and CU for attention.

All three have done the same with their basketball facilities. In a sense, they were Big XII ready.

Legit Candidates

Memphis: Good Football, great basketball, mediocre academics. Plays both major sports off campus in rented facilities. Great fit with Cincinnati and Houston.

USF: Mediocre Football, bad basketball, good academics. Plays football off campus at the Bucs stadium. Perfect partner for UCF.

Colorado State: Poor Football, mediocre basketball, excellent academics. Great cultural fit and partner for BYU. Beautiful new OCS, dumpy basketball arena.

Of those three, whichever two get their football programs and sports facilities up to a a P5 level first, get the call. Memphis should be the most logical choice but my money is on USF and Colorado State. USF has a spot on campus where they plan to build an OCS and seeing UCF leave them behind will light a fire to fix football. Colorado State has the academics and the best profile fit. If they can get their arena situation fixed along with fielding a football team that regularly competes for MWC conference crowns, there in.

As for Memphis, I just think they are to entrenched and comfortable with their facility situation. The problem with that is iwhen you couple it with their academic profile it screams "City State U" to the Big XII Presidents and that is something they loathe. Do any other schools in the P5 play all of their revenue sports off campus?

Your views of Memphis are not accurate. Some of it is your opinion which is fine, but City State U?

You say Memphis has "good" football. Reality is over the last 7 years they have had "great football" They are 65-26 in last 7 years (2nd highest g5 behind Boise who won 69 games). 3 top 25 finishes. NY6 Bowl game and 2 conference championships. This is better than all 4 new adds the Big 12 just made over that timeframe. And they are 5-1 against Cincy in last 6 and 5-0 in last 5 with Houston. So the last 7 years have been great. Prior to that...they had poor football program no doubt. But there has been massive investment $$ into football, the facilities, and programs. Give them the credit for the progress they have made. Colorado State and USF football records over the last 5 years are average at best.

The Liberty Bowl has had massive improvements made to the stadium. And another $50mm just announced again. It is 1.5 miles off campus...but the same neighborhood. And Memphis 5 year attendance is basically the same as Cincy and UCF....and quite a bit better than Houston. The Liberty Bowl has been renovated and it's pretty nice now.

Basketball has arguably the nicest basketball practice facility in the country at a cost of $22mm. It's ridiculous. Opened last year. The basketball team plays at the Fed Ex Forum which is downtown right off Beale Street. Memphis has top 10 attendance in basketball with an awesome atmosphere. They share this stadium with the Memphis Grizzlies which should tell you how nice it is. The downtown vibe can't be beat. Very similar to the Yum Center where Louisville plays. They average typically anywhere from 14-18k. #1 recruiting class in the country 2 of the last 3 years and have a preseason top 10 team this year.

Academically has made dramatic improvements over the last 6-8 years. Just moved up 13 spots announced last week in the US world rankings. It is a very diverse university in a vibrant proud city. The city supports the University very well. It's front page news.

New Tiger Athletic Park announced recently. Much of this is already in place (Football indoor and practice facilities). More coming....https://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/college/memphis-tigers/2021/08/25/memphis-athletics-unveils-comprehensive-plan-vision-next-decade/5576032001/

I am not saying Memphis is perfect...but definitely not the City State U. you try to portray. This is not the same university it was 10-20 years ago.

It's funny once the teams were announced they were pretty obviously above the rest.

I think Memphis would be next in line, followed by USF.

I think it would help - if they went to 14, to remove a property from the Mountain West -

I actually think UNLV and San Diego St are the most interesting there.

Name one school in the P5 that plays both of it's men's basketball and football games off campus? Name one school that' has moved up to the P5 in the last 25 years without an OCS? Memphis has come a long ways but it definitely still screams "city state." Memphis doesn't even have an auditorium on campus big enough to hold graduation. Personally I think that Memphis makes a powerful partner to Cincinnati and Houston in the Big XII. However I also think that the doing business as usual model has finally caught up to you. I will grant you that CSU may have missed it's window, but no way does USF not pour insane money into their football program over the next decade. They do not want to get left behind.

Graduation location? that’s definitely important.

You totally gloss over positives. I would love an OCS...but can’t say I think that is holding them back. They have invested a ton into renovations and it’s one mile from campus. They have made it nice and on par with many stadiums. Certainly a debate amongst Memphis fans.

As far as USF....Bottom half in football of AAC and 1 basketball tourney in 30 years. And I have nothing against USF other than than their football and basketball are weak. Which seems kinda important. Sure take them on potential and hope it works out. Seems like a poor business risk.. Don’t you want to expand with good programs?

At least Memphis is winning thankfully. Personally I think 51 ranked market and not the strongest academics held us back this round.

Hopefully we are close to next in line.

That is the point I am making. USF does not generate the ratings either. Old way of thinking does not work for today. Nobody do not watch schools to watch academics on the field. They look at success on the field and tv ratings.

Boise State
Memphis
North Dakota State

Those three schools are the next best football schools, and still can draw audience when they play P5 schools.

Appalachian State had 70 wins since 2014-2020. FYI. Slightly lower win percentage than Boise

Its a relatively poor metro and much smaller than the other schools. And those 3 rankings in the last 7 years are the only times they have ever been ranked.

The University of Louisville football stadium, though on campus and owned by UL, is severed from the campus by distance and railroad tracks. Few fans walk to it from their homes or businesses or from campus residential buildings. It is, essentially, a de facto off-campus stadium. And Papa Johns, as we all know, is located in downtown Louisville.

I realize this does not disprove your point. But ...

As Frank the Tank puts it think like a University President and not like An Athletic Director.

It is counter-intuitive, but this 4 team expansion actually helps put the “profile” of the B12 conference closer to other power conferences. All the schools have large student enrollments. By traditional metrics of academics, such as USN&WR rankings and research budgets, the additions may actually improve the the average of the remaining 8 institutions.

The new B12 will have to split revenues amongst more schools, but the university presidents appear to still cling to some traditional academic elitism.

If the B12 ever needs a next addition, I wouldn’t be surprised if USF is selected ahead of Memphis or Boise State.

The only two schools that make sense are Co State, Memphis and USF

The Academic whimps in Big 12 are R2 institutions.

R2
Baylor
TCU
BYU

R1 added are Cincinnati, Houston and UCF.

Boise State is an R2 and they are at the same level as research as Baylor, BYU and TCU.

Other candidates to considered from success from the pool of D1 academics schools?
USF R1
Hawaii R1
UNR R1
Buffalo R1
Temple R1
North Texas R1
Arkansas State R2
San Diego State R2
Georgia Southern R2
Boise State R2
Western Michigan R2
North Carolina A&T R2
North Dakota State R2
Ohio U. R2
Toledo R2
South Dakota State R2
Memphis R2
SMU R2
Utah State R2
Marshall R2
Wyoming R2

So to be correct. Boise State does have the academics to be including same with Memphis.

It's true - - the additions will help. Every conference that has ever added a new member has come out ahead in the long run.

Whoever suggested that it was counterintuitive that adding non-P5 schools could help a conference musn't have realized that conferences improved when non-P5 Cincy, Louisville, and (FCS) UConn joined the Big East, and when Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah (were all non-P5s) joined the PAC-12. Michigan State wasn't a power conference team before they joined the Big 10.

Growth has always been good for the major conferences, just like it has been good for the major professional sports. They have grown by 40% or 60% or 75% and as a result, they've gotten much, much richer & more powerful.

It's no accident that. both of the two power conferences that folded did so because they only had 8 members. The Big 12 faced a threat to its continued existence when it shrank to 8 members. Their only option was to grow.

There's honestly nothing counter-intuitive about it. Networks thrive on growth.

But ...

Bill you would be correct as of when Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium was built in 1998. As of 2008 that has changed.

I have included a link to a pdf of Louisville’s campus.

Cardinal Stadium for football and Jim Patterson Stadium for baseball are immediately south of the the main campus. UofL has started buying up private property between the campus and the football and baseball stadiums.

When the football stadium opened in 1998, UofL owned none of the property between the stadium and the campus proper to the North.

In 2008 UofL bought a 33 acre tract of land from Kentucky Trailer.

https://www.bizjournals.com/louisville/s...tory5.html

That property is directly behind UofL’s Engineering School on the North end and connects to Louisville’s baseball stadium on the South and Louisville’s football stadium / practice facility on the East side.

While the football stadium is not directly “on” campus it is connected to the campus by property that is owned and being developed by the university.

R2
Baylor
TCU
BYU

R1 added are Cincinnati, Houston and UCF.

Boise State is an R2 and they are at the same level as research as Baylor, BYU and TCU.

Other candidates to considered from success from the pool of D1 academics schools?
USF R1
Hawaii R1
UNR R1
Buffalo R1
Temple R1
North Texas R1
Arkansas State R2
San Diego State R2
Georgia Southern R2
Boise State R2
Western Michigan R2
North Carolina A&T R2
North Dakota State R2
Ohio U. R2
Toledo R2
South Dakota State R2
Memphis R2
SMU R2
Utah State R2
Marshall R2
Wyoming R2

So to be correct. Boise State does have the academics to be including same with Memphis.
Memphis expects to receive R1 status this December.

Houston, Cinci, and UCF have spent 100's of Millions each to ensure that their facilities, program resources, and coaching staffs look P5. UCF and Houston built new on Campus stadiums, Cincinnati spent about the same amount bringing their OCS and football practice facilities up to par.

We have a bingo! IMHO, you're on target. I have CSU and likely USF (over Memphis) for the new Big XIV in 2025.

The dark horse (pun intended) is SMU.

One point:

We had more butts in seats in 2019 than Kansas.
Great fit with Cincinnati and Houston.
