I would get it in writing that No other schools left that diminished the value of the L8 and if so can remain in the AAC without financial recourse.
To me it comes down to the simple fact that the Big 12 is the higher tier brand and is more centrally rooted than the AAC. In the past, this was a disadvantage as the Big 12 was vulnerable from all areas but incapable of attracting new schools at the top level. But when discussing expansion and recovery from future departures, it becomes an asset. Suddenly, nobody is out of reach or too far if the need is there.
Lets say the hateful 8 add Cincy and Houston and call it a day at 10. If ISU, OSU, and Kansas leave they need to fill three new spots. Come on up Memphis, BYU, CSU. Need to go further - UCF and USF. Need another Kansas and Oklahoma School? Wichita State and Tulsa. Need another state flagship? New Mexico and UNLV are on the table.
True none of these exchanges are straight apples to apples. But while it is primarily an apple discussion, we are in fruit market and there are a ton of oranges.

This post nicely explains why the R8 are actually in a solid position to have a good future. The "central U.S. location" benefits the league.

The downside is that they are #1 only in the small states of Kansas and West Virginia. They are #2 in Iowa and Oklahoma and #3,4,5 in Texas.
