first was tricky dick’s watch - the other was Carter’s … I thought both sucked balls…still do…
Nixon and carter were awful presidents…the former was a domestic dipshite, and the latter sucked at foreign and domestic…
I don’t really disagree with that; I consider both of their presidencies to have been failures. And I know you’re not offering that ^^^ as a comprehensive history of the times. But I just have to say something in mitigation in regards to the Trickster:
the day he took office, America had ~550,000 servicemen in-country, fighting a war on the other side of the world with nothing close to a strategy for either exit or victory.
Everything that he did, or did not do, from Jan. 1969 until Feb. 1973 was filtered through the prism of that war and how that war would be impacted, including how to secure the release of the POWs. We can both legitimately criticize Nixon for a long list of failures, and also acknowledge that his political freedom of movement was constrained from Day 1 in a way that no other president since Lincoln had to deal with.
As for the “domestic shite”, Nixon did not have time to deal with it (Vietnam) and since he didn’t really much care about it in the first place, it was easy to farm it out to White House aides and the Congressional leadership. Good, bad, or indifferent, that’s what happened. The one exception was when Nixon devoted his personal attention to Southern school integration, an issue which simply could not be kicked down the road any longer, much as Nixon would’ve been willing to do so.
Say what you will about any of the people or issues involved, but the fact remains Nixon achieved a non-violent resolution to a problem that had haunted the country for a long time. On that count at least, I can honestly say well done.
