So, basically, the SEC is going to establish itself as a farm system for pro sports, and the rest of us can go back to amateur college athletics?

This is interesting. I am hearing a lot of people predict that the SEC goes to 24 teams and basically wraps up every major matchup that TV would be interested in. If that were to happen, there is some question in my mind as to whether that might be a good thing for the rest of us. Maybe it allows us to get back to some semblance of amateurism. On the other hand, the people making decisions around college athletics are idiots, and would probably find a way to screw that opportunity up leaving us with something that is worse than I am capable of conceiving.

I agree. I still think it winds up being 4 16-20 team conferences, but even after that, there are plenty of good teams and competition. If it puts us in a league with rivals, good travel, fan interest and competition... then let the P4 have their salary wars etc. Id be happy playing ECU, Marshall, UAB, Temple, VCU, Charlotte, etc.

Why would teams with a sure path to playoffs weaken that by having to first go thru Bama?
Clemson is a 99% lock to make the playoffs every year. As is Ohio St. why threaten that with having to go thru Bama in either a division or a championship game?

Because apparently the people who make decisions at universities are the greediest most short-sighted people on the planet.

Those programs would not consider the move to the SEC without absolutely being sure that the CFP was going to twelve.
I think that is imminent.

MONEY!!! Plain and simple. They see a path to more money regardless of a national championship. And if you win the Championship, we'll you just out lasted the best 30 or 40 teams in the country. That is definitive.

We usually do. Im hopeful, but also realistic. Even when things look like we are finally going to catch a break and achieve our potential, something almost always comes in to muck it up (Butler, Injuries, Transfers, ECU moving, shootings, coach leaving... its hard being a Monarch fan). Im under no delusion that if we wind up in an AAC that it will be anything like it is now. I just want to be in a conference with better geography, rivalries, and multiple basketball bids. If we land somewhere with Temple and ECU that sounds like a good possibility, no matter what its called.

They are also expanding the playoffs so losses can be afforded.

Agree. And 3 losses in the Super-SEC will be enough to get in the top 12.

I still prefer the A10/Indy scenario, but I'm a basketball first guy. A watered down AAC would still be an improvement. Love the idea of an ECU (football) rivalry as well as playing Navy. Temple doesn't excite me unless they can get their basketball program back, but they are at least close. Would imagine some of the more exciting brand name schools like UCF, Cincy, Memphis, and Houston would be gone before we got there. If so, not sure Wichita State would stick around for what's left of basketball.

RE: P5 Realignment Rumors - The Gift That Keeps On Giving
This is about creating four conferences that will dominate the college athletics landscape even more than the Power 5 currently do. It is not just ODU that is going to get crapped on but, any school not in the ACC, SEC, Big10 or PAC12. AAC can try all they want, but the boys are NEVER going to let them into the club. All other schools will be FCS+, with one maybe two teams getting a shot at an expanded playoff. Maybe!!!
Bowl games will be going the way of the DoDo as advertising revenue dries up and interest among casual fans wanes. Going to a bowl anymore is equal to everyone gets a trophy. I say this because the standard is if you are average (6-6) you get to go. You don't even have to be better than average anymore. In 2016 we went to the Bahamas Bowl and won, which was GREAT. But in reality, did it put anything in our wallet?? The articles from back then said less than $100k.
I love football, but the reality is that the non Power 4 conferences are going to need to figure out an alignment that places location first. Meaning commissioners , presidents and ADs need to put ego aside, find someone who can read a damn map and realign. None of the lower tier conferences including the AAC will profitably survive the financial burden of travel without some adjustments. This would create rivalries, for fans, players and more importantly drive interest among media partners. Someone has to be the voice of reason and adult in the room.
Just my two cents.

All you say is true, but as long as there are inequities in the payouts for the G5 conferences (AAC around $10M vs. CUSA around $700k?) there is too much incentive to avoid reorganizing sensibly. If the G6 (including a new B12 and AAC) worked with the MAC, CUSA, SB and MWC to sell G6 football rights together, and split the proceeds equally... well then the conference decisions could be made about rivalries, proximity, travel costs etc.. not media payouts. Which would be much better for everyone involved and actually make the product more desirable in the long run.

RE: P5 Realignment Rumors - The Gift That Keeps On Giving
Highly unlikely. There is no adult in the room that can make the realignment decisions for 60 or so universities. Just like there is no adult even in the B12 room that could stop Texas and OU from conspiring to make their moves over the past 6 months.
It's every U for itself and unfortunately the only entity that they are all listening to are the whispers from those that control the TV revenue. Which is exactly why we talk about and focus on geographic proximity. We are getting no whispers from the TV backroom about increasing revenue.
